"I thought of it as the day that my mom was waiting for. I was just happy to see her be happy," the boy said.
Young Mekhi Sheffield had an emotionally overwhelming moment when he witnessed his mother, Sommer Jean, getting set to tie the knot. Mekhi remarked that the union was everything he had hoped for his treasured mother, who had raised him alone for the last nine years. "It's better than anything I could ever get on this earth," he said on Good Morning America. Mekhi was to play a significant part in Sommer's January 8 wedding by helping his grandmother walk the bride down the aisle. Sommer realized there wasn't enough time before the ceremony began in downtown St. Augustine, Florida, for her to see her son in his suit and to show him what she looked like in her wedding dress. "I said to my makeup artist and hair stylist, 'I guess I won't get to do it,' but they said they would make time," Sommer, 34, a business analyst, tells TODAY.
In a video shared on Facebook, the young boy is seen entering his mom's bridal suite and getting extremely emotional as he sees how happy she is. "Wow, mom, you look really pretty," replies Mekhi. The young boy is quickly overcome with emotion and begins weeping with joy for his mother. "I love you," Sommer said as her son walks over for a hug. "Are they happy tears?" she asks, to which he replies, "I'm so happy for you." Mekhi doesn't like to cry in front of people, but Sommer tells TODAY that Mekhi was overwhelmed since he had never before seen his mother look so lovely. "When the camera turned off, I wiped his tears and reminded him how to hold his arm when he walked me down the aisle," she said. "He was proud to do it."
Sommer, who refers to her son as her "best friend," expressed her own emotion at her son's response. "I actually started to tear up myself but he does a really good job of keeping me calm," Sommer said. "He knew I had makeup on and he didn't want … to make a mess of my makeup so I wanted to reach for him so bad, but I was happy that they pretty much encouraged him to come to me so it was really sweet. It was a really great moment for sure," she added.
Knowing how precious the upcoming wedding was, the middle school student admitted to being overwhelmed at the time. "Me and my mom have been through quite a bit together and all of those moments just replayed in my mind, and I was like, 'Wow, we've really been through a lot. Now we're finally here!'" he said. "I thought of it as the day that my mom was waiting for. I was just happy to see her be happy," he added.
Mekhi managed to control his emotions until the wedding march before breaking down again when he spotted Jeff Jean, his 42-year-old stepfather. Mekhi's mom got engaged to Jeff on Thanksgiving in 2022 after meeting online in May 2021. At the dinner table, Jeff surprised Mekhi's family by popping the question. Mekhi's mother believes that after growing close to his stepfather, her kid has become less guarded. "As a mom, you want to share your kid with the world and now people can see what I see," Sommer said, adding, "It was the most beautiful moment ever."
