When cops were conducting a welfare check at a home in New Boston, Texas, they uncovered the remains of a 67-year-old man’s son. Police say that David McMichael was keeping the skeletal remains of his son Jason in his home—nearly four years after the son had died in May 2018, according to USA Today.
McMichael was charged with the abuse of a corpse, the New Boston Police Department said in a statement posted on Facebook. The cops reportedly turned up at McMichael's home after a family member from out of town requested a wellness check because they were concerned for McMichael’s son.
When they arrived, they asked McMichael if he knew the reason for their visit. McMichael stated their visit was because he had a body in the kitchen, public affairs officer Katie Jimenez said.
“He was asked by officers on the scene if he knew why they were there,” a police press release obtained by the Daily Beast states. “Mr. McMichael advised them it was because he had a body in his kitchen.”

Once the cops got inside the home, police found skeletal remains which are believed to belong to Jason McMichael, David McMichael's son who died in May 2018, according to the police department's media statement.
The remains were then taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas to help determine how the person, who has only officially been identified as a male, might have died. However, Fox News reports that the Texarkana Crime Scene unit and New Boston Police got a warrant and determined that the remains were Jason’s.
It is still unclear what caused Jason's death and how old he was when he died, but cops say they never had a missing person report filed for McMichael’s son. No one else was believed to be living in the home at the time. Meanwhile, the case is still under investigation.
"We should know hopefully know what happened in the next couple of weeks," said Jimenez.

"Right now, we're waiting on the report to come back from Southwestern Forensics Institute on the autopsy, New Boston police spokeswoman Katie Jimenez told KTBS. “Police are currently interviewing family members at the moment.”
As for McMichael, he is currently in jail in Texarkana. "There is a chance he could be bonded out," Jimenez said.
