The talented 22-year-old revealed that the cocktail dress is handmade from 2,652 pennies!
A penny is worth a lot more than you think! At just 22 years old, Artist Shay Rose (aka Crescent Shay) gathered up all the pennies she could find to create a stunning, iridescent cocktail dress made out of coppery one-cent pieces.
The project took quite a lot of time and effort, but the end result is clearly worth it!
Shay began the Penny Dress project in December 2021 and completed the shimmering piece on January 26, 2022. Her process included collecting 2,652 pennies, washing them, machining holes in them and finally sewing them together to create a dress. She started working on the top half first before making it to the bottom and then attaching them together at the end. don't miss out on some of the cool features of the dress including the cross-back strap bodice and bottom fringe skirt that the artist herself modeled in the photos and videos on her social medial platforms.

The creative artist took to Instagram captioning her creation: some photos of the penny dress are here, as well as a full YouTube tutorial I just posted!!! And now I think I can officially call the penny dress completed :D typically when I post “finished” photos of the dress I love to have big full body shots of the whole look, but I found for this dress I really loved the close up detail shots so much more? I love how you can actually see each individual penny and how they makeup the top, but when you step back it all burs together into this sparkly shiny piece :D This is just a quick shoot in my backyard, but hopefully I’ll be able to do a nicer photoshoot later this year - I think nice penny dress photos could look so cool, especially in because it reflects light so beautifully!
The good news is that if you're an aspiring artist who's looking to create a penny dress of your own, Shay is here to help. She wrote that she also "made a full 10 minute video on how I made this dress!!! It shows a bunch more detail and takes you through the full process of making this dress - and overall I am just really really proud of it. :) This is my favorite video I’ve made so far, so if you enjoyed this dress, definitely go check it out."
