"I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out," Hadid admitted earlier.
Bella Hadid is celebrating half a year of being sober. The 26-year-old supermodel shared in an Instagram Story on April 19, that she has not had alcohol for the past six months, according to Good Morning America. Last month she celebrated with a trip to Las Vegas as she proclaimed she was "5 months" alcohol-free in an Instagram post. Hadid jetted to the city to celebrate the milestone of her sobriety journey. The daughter of Yolanda Hadid has been open about her relationship with alcohol and has been known to take breaks from drinking.
According to PEOPLE, she was arrested and charged with a DUI in 2014 and over the years has realized how important it was to take a control of the situation. In 2022 she spoke to InStyle, revealing that it became "a lot harder to pick up the glass" after her doctor showed her the effects of alcohol on her brain. "I have done my fair share of drinking. I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out that I felt like I wouldn't be able to control myself," she told the outlet in January 2022.
Hadid has mostly cut out alcohol since mid-2021 — and is determined to make it stay that way. "I don't feel the need because I know how it will affect me at 3 in the morning when I wake up with horrible anxiety thinking about that one thing I said five years ago when I graduated high school," she said. "There's just this never-ending effect of, essentially, you know, pain and stress over those few drinks that didn't really do much, you know?"
The model has been suffering from mental health issues and used alcohol as a coping mechanism. She would often struggle with "crippling anxiety" and at times felt like she couldn't leave her own house. Alcohol was a way to help her "to loosen up and be able to speak to people and socialize," she said candidly.
She also spoke to WSJ Magazine for the publication's My Monday Morning series, where she opened up about her "excruciating and debilitating" mental health struggles. Hadid explained that she hasn't had a stylist "in a long time, maybe two years now," and she was "in such a weird place mentally that it was really complicated for me to get out of the house and put an outfit together, especially with the anxiety of [paparazzi] being outside and all that."
The supermodel would also share raw selfies on Instagram of herself crying in an attempt to share her personal struggles, reassuring her fans and followers that they are not alone. "I would have really depressive episodes and my mom or my doctor would ask how I was and instead of having to respond in text, I would just send them a photo," she said. "It was the easiest thing for me to do at the time because I was never able to explain how I was feeling."
“Even though on Instagram things look so beautiful, at the end of the day, we are all cut from the same cloth,” she added.
