Both Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are traditional when it comes to matters of the heart, so the country singer asked her father and sons for her hand before popping the question.
One of the incredible parts of marrying someone with kids is that we get to gain an extra family. For a single mom or dad, it is important to find a partner who thinks of their children fondly, respects them, and cares for them. And, it seems that singer Gwen Stefani, 51, has found that person in Blake Shelton, 44, whom she met on The Voice in 2015 when they both coached young participants.
The couple recently got engaged and shared the news with the world. After dating for five years, they are finally ready to walk down the aisle. A source close to the Hollaback Girl singer said that Shelton honored the important men in her life by asking their permission before proposing.
"Blake told her boys that he wanted to propose and asked their permission," a source told People. "Her family very much approves of him. He's an amazing partner and a great extra dad to the boys. Gwen is ecstatic. The proposal was a surprise," they added.
The couple shared their joyful message with the world on October 27 after getting engaged privately several days ago. Stefani wrote "Yes please" as the caption to her post while Shelton wrote, "Hey @gwenstefani thanks for saving my 2020 and the rest of my life. I love you. I heard a YES!"
Stefani’s sons Kingston, 14, Zuma, 12, and Apollo, 6, whom she shares with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, have been showered with love by Shelton over the last few years. The country singer doesn't shy back from showing how much he cares for them and Stefani appreciates all the help she gets from him.
For Father’s Day in 2020, she shared multiple photos of her boys with the Happy Anywhere singer. "Happy Father’s Day @blakeshelton. Thank you for helping me raise these boys!! #weloveyou! G❤️K❤️Z❤️A," she captioned the post.
And, it looks like Shelton has already been filling in the big role of being a father. In a September 2019 interview on Today, the Rich Girl singer was asked if Shelton would be a good father. "He is a good dad, actually. He’s been helping me out a lot, so I literally get to the point where I’m like, 'You gotta get home, I need help.' It’s hard. I got three boys," she said.
However, Shelton didn't stop at including Stefani's boys in the proposal. "Blake's plan to propose to Gwen began by asking her father for her hand in marriage. Gwen is very traditional so he truly felt that asking her father for approval was the proper thing to do," a source said, as per Entertainment Tonight. "And her father adores Blake. Gwen has been ready to tie the knot for a long time and Blake knew this was the perfect time."
The country singer was the one who wanted to take it slow apparently but he's now sure that he wants to spend his life with her. "Blake has been the one who wanted to take it slow in the beginning but recently he decided it was time. During the pandemic, they’ve had lots of downtime together and he truly saw the importance of spending life with the person you love," the source said. "Gwen takes marriage very seriously and was disappointed that her first marriage [to Gavin Rossdale] didn’t work out. She wasn't in a hurry because she wanted to ensure Blake was ready."
The source added, "They both live incredibly busy lives and have managed to make sure they work together and spend as much time as they can together. The pandemic has given them both the time they needed to slow down and just appreciate and love each other."
