"Not many people knew what was going on," shared Brown, talking about how he was blamed for Houston's death.
Trigger Warning: This story mentions drug usage that may be disturbing to readers.
Whitney Houston was Bobby Brown's “love at first sight” from the time they met backstage at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards, according to New York Post.
Brown, 53, says that he was enamored by Houston’s smell as well as her eyes. “There was something about her eyes that made me melt inside,” the R&B crooner shared in his new documentary Biography: Bobby Brown, which premieres on A&E Monday and Tuesday nights. “Just the way she looked at me from Day 1 until the last day we were together, it was always special.”
“She was just the kindest, sweetest person that I knew,” he added.
But on the day of their wedding on July 18, 1992, Brown discovered a side of her that changed everything.
Brown was shocked to know Houston used drugs. “I walked in and, um, saw her doing a line of coke. It was a shocker to me seeing her sniff for the first time,” he recalled. “I think that was when I realized that we had more in common than I thought. I was new to it, and I guess she had been doing it for a while.”
“We always felt that our love was strong enough to overcome any obstacle that was put in front of us.”
Though they were divorced in 2007, he wonders how different their relationship could have been if not for their individual addiction. In the documentary, Brown said his ex-wife continued using drugs even when he quit which deeply impacted their marriage. Looking back, he wishes he had found a way to help Houston stop using drugs. “We would still be together if it wasn’t for, you know, drugs. Drugs just got the best of us.”
Brown was often blamed by the press for Houston’s unfortunate death on February 11, 2012. "That was pretty rough," said Brown. "Not many people knew what was going on. Not many people knew how [those accusations] affected me. Not many people knew what they were talking about. They weren’t living, breathing, or waking up with us. They just took it to the outer limits of expressing what they thought was going on. But the truth is, they really didn’t know what was going on."
According to Fox News, Houston's death at age 48 was a drug-related accidental drowning. She was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone which ended tragically far too soon.
Now, leaving aside the past, the singer, who has been sober for several years now, is excited about his future.
"I don’t think I’ve made it yet," he chuckled. "I’m still working on that part of my life. I think I’ve had some success. I’ve certainly had a lot of success that has led me to this point, but my whole being won’t allow me to say that I’m finished. God wouldn’t have me here for nothing. My life now is beautiful. I’m enjoying every moment I’m present with my children today. I handle my business differently."
"The biggest misconception is that you can’t do it," he continued. "It’s easier than you think. If you want better for yourself, if you want sanity, you can achieve it for yourself. It takes hard work, but it can be done. You can go through ups and downs, but there’s always something better for you on the other side if you keep trying."
