Not all break-ups are messy or bad, and many people remember their exes fondly. They might have taught us something about ourselves or about life, and perhaps, we cherish it even though the relationship didn't work. After all, some people part ways amicably after finding out that they are not compatible.

For instance, Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy were allegedly engaged after they met on the set of the 2003 romantic comedy Just Married. Kutcher, then 24, and Murphy, then 25, didn't start romancing each other until after the shooting got wrapped up. "When we were doing the movie, we were just friends," said Kutcher to People. "We just kind of started hanging out more. And now we’ve been hanging out a lot more."

He was so head over heels over her that he was ready to do more movies with her. "I learn something from that girl every day. She is a pro," he told MTV. "She just brings it, man. She's really, really awesome. She makes me smile every day. She shows me something about my job every day. She's the best, man. I'll do anything with her, any movie, hands down."

The couple was seen in matching rings at the time, which fueled the engagement rumors. However, their relationship ended after only a few months and it's not known if they were planning to walk down the aisle together. Kutcher married Demi Moore and later Mila Kunis, while Murphy married Simon Monjack. In 2009, when Murphy died at the age of 32, Kutcher was left shocked even though there had been strange rumors around her for a few years.

In the early 2000s, there were rumors about her health, which she addressed in 2004. "There have been so many rumors in the past couple years! I'd rather not perpetuate something that isn't true. But no, I've never had an eating disorder. And I don't do drugs. I have a glass of champagne now and then. I'm generally the person dancing at a party who everybody always thinks is the intoxicated one, but I'm really not," she told Cosmopolitan in 2004.

Murphy died on December 20, 2009, from pneumonia. MTV reported Kutcher tweeting, "Today the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. See you on the other side, kid."

In a way, Kutcher confirmed what she said about herself. "I just celebrate who [Murphy] was. She was like the person who walked in the room and she was always the first person to dance. You know when you go to a party and everybody is standing around, and the music is going -- and you know sooner or later everyone is going to dance. She was always the first person to dance. And I just try to connect to that and celebrate who she was and how she was, and not make sense of it, 'cause there is no sense of making sense of it," he told ABC News.

He also added that he wasn't close to her before her death. After all, they were both married to other people by then. "Not really," Kutcher said. "I mean she came in ... We were casting a TV show that we were producing, and I wanted her to play this role in it, and she came in and I got to see her probably about two months before she passed away," he added.

Murphy was briefly engaged to talent manager Jeff Kwatinetz, and then to Joe Macaluso, a production assistant on her 2004 movie Little Black Book between her relationship with Kutcher and Monjack. Her break-up with Kwatinetz had made some headlines back then but not more than the way she died.
