A Happily Married Cameron Diaz Reveals How “Timing Is Everything” When It Comes to Relationships

She has kept her marriage out of the public eye because she feels she owes it to nobody to share her personal life anymore.

With age comes wisdom for many and actress Cameron Diaz feels the same way. Working since the age of 22, this America's sweetheart has known superstardom and still chose to take a backseat. She has semi-retired and is instead focusing on her marriage with musician Benji Madden.

The couple got married on January 5, 2015, in an intimate wedding ceremony after dating for seven months. The Charlie's Angels star and the Good Charlotte guitarist have rarely been seen in public but share a close bond they want to keep away from the public eye.

"You have to find someone in the same place as you are. Timing is everything," she said, according to EOnline. "If you get into a relationship where you want something the guy doesn't want, it's never gonna work. You're never going to get him to be in that place. No matter how old you are, finding the guy who's in the same place as you are and wants to show up is the only way a relationship works, period."

Recently, she opened up some more about her relationship and told InStyle magazine, "I’m grateful for every moment I have. I just want to build better, stronger friendships with the people who are in it with me. Of course, that includes my husband [musician Benji Madden]. Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me. My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner. Marriage is certainly hard, and it’s a lot of work. You need somebody who’s willing to do the work with you, because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50, period. All the time."

In her younger days, she dated many a hunk but Benji, six years her junior, is unlike them all. The couple respects each other immensely and spends as much time together as possible. She has taken time to work on herself and reflect on her past too.

"Here's the thing: You make the same mistake over and over again until you learn your lesson," she said when she was 42. "We girls sometimes do the thing where we pick the same person over and over again—they look and seem different, but deep down, they're the same. And that's on us," she added.

Her relationship with Benji has helped her heal herself after working for two decades non-stop.

"I think it's a matter of I just hadn't met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there's a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends," she explained. "And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people! We are so different from one another, but we share the same values—we're totally two peas in a pod. We are both just weird enough for each other." She continued, "We women are objectified so much. Somehow my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it's like not to have that be a part of a relationship, and being an equal."

Her changed attitude is proof that marriage has had a positive effect on her mind and life. She has learned to prioritize herself and is not apologetic about it. She is now working on a new project in wellness. She wants to heal others as she healed herself and her husband is right by her side in this.

"The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to. I don’t miss performing," she wrote in InStyle. "[W]hatever I do, it has to be something I’m passionate about — something that just feels effortless."
