The pair met back in the late '80s while working on one of her most famous movie, Beetlejuice. Welch was the production designer for the film and at the time they met, O'Hara described her husband as "very attractive." "He finally asked me out," she recalled to The New Yorker. "We went on location at the end of the movie, and we started dating. I moved to L.A. to be with him," adding, "Yeah, I moved for love." The couple eventually got married in 1992 and have since had two children: Matthew, born in 1994, and Luke, born in 1997.

Welch reminisced about the time he first met his wife to Uproxx in 2015, "Towards the end of the movie, Tim [Burton] told me, we were shooting in Vermont, 'You should ask Catherine out.' And I said, 'What?' And he said, 'Yeah, you should ask her out.' It didn’t even occur to me that I was even supposed to talk to actors. But since Tim told me to I did and then we dated and we're married and here we are today." When asked about his fondest memories from the movie, he said, "My memories of Beetlejuice are very fond, of course. Not to mention, I met my wife, who was in it."

O'Hara once confessed on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live that she once had a thing for her fellow Schitt's Creek star Eugene Levy when both were at Second City in Toronto decades ago. "So, everybody at Second City Theater tried to date everybody. Like, 'He makes me laugh. I should go out with him' ... So, we did maybe one or two dates," she said. The two went on two find love elsewhere but she remembers her costar as "a gentleman, [he] has always been a gentleman. And we get to have this working relationship because we didn't go anywhere."
