“She is doing everything she can while working with doctors because she wants to perform," a source close to Celine Dion revealed.
Céline Dion is finding strength and solace in her sons as she copes with her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome. In an exclusive report by PEOPLE, it was revealed that the Canadian singer, who recently had to cancel her concert dates through April 2024, is determined to get back onstage despite the challenges posed by the disease.
A music source close to Dion shared with PEOPLE, "It's heartbreaking that she has had to cancel touring, but she is suffering mobility and other issues from the disease disrupting her daily life." The source added that Dion is working closely with doctors and doing everything she can to regain control of her health. Singing is her passion and performing is a vital part of her life.
Despite the setbacks, she remains hopeful and is determined to sing again. Another source close to Dion revealed that her three sons, René-Charles (22 years old) and twins Nelson and Eddy (12 years old), bring immense joy to her life during this challenging time. The insider described, "Seeing this happen is upsetting to her and to everyone around her. Her main focuses are always her sons and performing. She is the most selfless and considerate person." The source continued, "Céline just loves her boys so much. They are amazing. They give her all the support and love that she needs."
The source added, "They are her light right now." Dion announced the cancellation of her shows last week, explaining that she was unable to prepare and perform due to her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis. The decision was a difficult one for her, "I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%" she wrote over Instagram.
Stiff-person syndrome is a rare and incurable neurological disease that causes debilitating muscle spasms. Dion revealed her diagnosis in December and shared her struggles in an Instagram video, acknowledging the challenges she has faced with her health. “She is doing everything she can while working with doctors because she wants to perform. She has not given up at all. She is hoping to get all of the issues with this disease under control so she can sing again," added the source. The condition affects the central nervous system, leading to disabilities and limitations in daily activities. Symptoms can include severe pain, hyper-rigidity, chronic anxiety, and muscle spasms that can be so intense they may cause joint dislocations or fractures per Stiff Person Syndrome Foundation.
Despite the difficulties she faces, Céline Dion's determination to overcome her health challenges and return to the stage is unwavering. Her love for her sons and the unwavering support they provide serve as a source of strength for her. As she continues to focus on her health, Dion remains an inspiration to her fans worldwide, showcasing resilience and the importance of prioritizing well-being in the face of adversity.
