Long-distance relationships aren't for everyone but thanks to technology, keeping in touch is a lot easier than it used to be. Nevertheless, relationships that are separated by thousands of miles can be difficult no matter how strong the connection is. Luke Bond, 22, and Sarah Dorough, 21, are hoping to make their relationship go the distance.

The fitness instructors have met only twice in their lives and are separated by 9,000 miles. They met virtually on Instagram in December 2021 and bonded over their similar lifestyles. With time they fell in love and now they're taking their relationship to the next step.

“He was asking me some questions about fitness, as he is also doing personal training,” Dorough said according to the New York Post recalling their earlier conversations. “The next time he reached out, I felt like I kind of knew him, which made me a little more comfortable, but also he was asking about my faith and Christianity. He was more genuine and asking about Bible verses and stuff like that,” she added.

Bond had apparently traveled for 32 hours from Wellington, New Zealand, to meet Dorough at her home in Suffolk, Virginia. She described their first meeting as almost dream-like. “An experience I haven’t ever felt before — that first hug was something we had waited so long for, so you can only imagine how exciting that moment was when we ran up to each other and gave each other a hug,” Dorough gushed. “To this day that moment still blows my mind,” she added.

Dorough decided to make a trip to New Zealand in December to spend Christmas with Bond and his family. In a surprising twist, her boyfriend got down on one knee and proposed. The engagement took place during a camping trip with Bond’s family in New Zealand’s Lake Taupō. “It was super exciting, this was something we had to work out — whether we do want to spend our lives together — we did figure that out because we don’t want to keep traveling back and forth,” Dorough said.

The fitness enthusiast confessed that long-distance relationships are hard work but she believes the couple is making efforts to make it work out. “The biggest thing is trusting each other, especially when you’re far away from each other. There is always going to be little thought[s] that can pop into each other’s head.”

The 21-year-old added, “We really struggle, but we also have a few things that we do to make the long-distance better, like having proper communication, prioritizing our calls and having trust in each other — we really trust each other.” The couple will rely on trust until they decide where to settle down more permanently.
