The acclaimed actress admitted that she was a career-focused woman and did not believe she would ever be ready for parenthood. However, everything changed when she adopted a baby girl named Dexter in 1996, at the age of 50. A few years later, in 2001, she adopted her son, Duke, as per BIOGRAPHY. In 2008, Keaton explained why she waited so long to have children, saying that she wanted to be in a "strong and substantive" relationship first. However, that was not possible, as she never married. "I've had such an unusual life," she told Ladies' Home Journal as per USA Today. "Obviously career-oriented. I was happy to be a daughter well into my 40s. That was something that meant a lot to me."

Keaton said, "I didn't think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother. I wanted to be in a good relationship. Those good relationships that are strong and substantive never happened for me, and that prolonged my indecisiveness." She said that when she fell in love, it "took over my life for a long time." She admitted to having "years of selfishness," but said that being a mother is better. "Motherhood was not an urge I couldn't resist," she said. "It was more like a thought I'd been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in."

Keaton's choice to be single did not diminish her desire for a fulfilling relationship. She admitted in an interview that she wanted to be in a happy relationship, but that it never materialized, leaving her unsure of herself for a long time. Keaton said that the protracted search for a satisfying relationship consumed her life for a very long time and ultimately resulted in her choosing to stay alone.
