Chris Watts, 35, killed his pregnant wife and two daughters in 2018. He is serving multiple life sentences.
The loss of even a single family member is devastating but to lose multiple beloved people is a huge tragedy. However, things get complicated when the loss of one's family is one's own fault. For instance, a Colorado dad is mourning his family even though he's the reason they are no longer in the world. Not by any accident but by intentionally causing their deaths.
Chris Watts, who has been dubbed as the Family Killer, is a 35-year-old man serving time in prison for killing his pregnant wife, Shanann, and their two daughters, Bella and Celeste, who were not even five, in August 2018. Chris, on whose crimes multiple documentaries have been made already, is in a Wisconsin prison in protective custody. The holidays are going to be a hard time for him.
A source who speaks to him regularly in prison said that he keeps a Bible and pictures of his family, whom he killed for his selfish purposes, in his cell. Chris was having an affair with a co-worker, who was pivotal in his arrest, which was the main factor that led to the death of his family. He had wanted to end his marriage and start a new life. Instead of asking for a divorce, he choked Shanann and smothered his daughters, and then hid their bodies in one of the properties owned by the company he worked at. His daughters were found in an oil tank, and their autopsy reports revealed that their bodies were full of chemicals.
Chris admitted to killing his family and has been in prison since 2018. "He doesn't like talking about his life before prison," said the source to People. "But, he has said that he used to be a huge fan of Christmas: decorating the house, spending time with family. And he knows 100% that it'll never happen again, and that it's his own fault. He's in a hell of his own making."
"The prison has a 'Christmas dinner,' but it's basically bland turkey and potatoes," the jail source added. "It's not exactly the feast you'd imagine for Christmas. In a sense, that's more depressing, because it reminds the inmates that it's Christmas and that they're getting an inferior copy of the holiday."
The only thing he would be doing in the holidays will be to write to his penpals, most of whom are women who don't care that he's a murderer and have expressed romantic interest in him. He reportedly spends a lot of time writing and reading letters he receives from these "pals."
"He'll write his penpals this season, and they're sending him notes, as well," said the source. "It's literally all he can do at this point. He hates the holidays."
Many of the letter writers have sent him their photos as well, as per NZHerald. They also send him money. "In my heart, you are a great guy," wrote a woman named Candace. "I'm hoping to brighten your days," wrote another. One woman sent a photo of herself in a bikini.
One of the regular penpals is a middle-aged woman named Tammy. She sent at least six photos of herself with the letters. "You don't know me but I think you might want to," wrote Tammy in her first letter.
Meanwhile, one woman called Laurel wrote lengthy pages-long letters and included postcards from Hawaii. "I'm not expecting to hear back from you (at least not yet) and I totally understand. And my purpose in writing to you is to solely give you a glimmer of HOPE, and maybe a laugh or smile," she wrote. "Things have a way of turning around. Try to keep your thoughts positive my dear. You can get through this !!!" Many of the women didn't believe that he was the killer and sympathized with him, and most of them find him handsome and attractive.
Responding to his mother's letter, Chris said that he was a changed man and has a newfound relationship with God, according to People. "I’m still a Dad! I’m still a son! No matter what," he wrote. "Now, I can add servant of God to that mix! He has shown me peace, peace, love and forgiveness, and that’s how I live every day."
Unfortunately for him, he is going to live every day of his life in prison for the crimes he committed.
