"Because of the irresponsibility and negligence of the companies/contractors, etc, he did not make it back home to his family who misses him and is hurt tonight by his passing," the fundraiser reads.
A tragic incident occurred earlier this week on Wednesday, June 7 at a construction site in Pacoima, California, where a grandfather of three lost his life after a wall collapsed on top of him. The incident took place on the 10500 block of North Glenoaks Boulevard when a 6-foot tall cinder block wall broke into multiple sections and fell on three construction workers, trapping them underneath, reports PEOPLE. According to a statement from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Captain Erik Scott, the wall collapsed shortly after 8:45 a.m. local time. "Two workers were able to escape. Unfortunately, one was left trapped under the rubble," authorities wrote in a press release.

Despite efforts by emergency responders, Javier Calderon did not survive the incident. Calderon was described by his family on a GoFundMe page as a “loving husband, a wonderful father to five daughters, and an irreplaceable grandfather to three grandchildren.” His passing has deeply impacted his family, friends, and loved ones. His daughter, Monica Calderon said, "It was all shocking news to hear he had passed, not only to family but friends and loved ones." Calderon's wife and two daughters expected him to return home for dinner the day he passed away.

The organizers of the GoFundMe campaign also shared, "He left behind 2 daughters and a wife that still depended on him, and expected him to arrive home for dinner," the organizer wrote, adding that he had also "promised his granddaughter to roast marshmallows on Friday night, as that was usually the start of a sleepover at their grandparent’s house for the weekend." The tragic incident has shattered these plans and left a void in the lives of Calderon's loved ones. According to firefighters of LAFD who responded to the scene, the workers were digging a long footing next to the wall that eventually collapsed.
The crowdfunding page further reads, “However, because of the irresponsibility and negligence of the companies/contractors, etc. who sent him out to that job site expecting him to complete the job, he did not make it back home to his family who misses and hurt tonight by his passing.” The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health has initiated an investigation into the incident. This investigation aims to determine the cause of the wall collapse and assess any potential safety violations at the job site. The authorities will thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including adherence to safety regulations and protocols. Calderon's daughter, Monica, expressed her belief that the job site violated safety regulations, placing the workers at risk. She asserted, “This accident should have not happened.”
