Helen Mirren's 'Fate Was Sealed' After 12 Yrs of Dating Despite Not Wanting to Marry | "Just Had to Meet the Right Turnip"

“I have to say that the thing I loved most about Taylor was his absolute, total commitment to his children,” Helen Mirren said about her husband Taylor Hackford.

Helen Mirren, the well-known Hollywood star, never intended to get married in favor of pursuing a prosperous profession. Her "fate was sealed," though when she fell in love with a married man, and everything changed after his divorce. Mirren being an excellent actor, without a question, who also appeared as Hermia in 1967's A Midsummer Night's Dream, had always worked hard to be her best on the silver screen.

Revealing in her autobiography, In the Frame: My Life in Words and Pictures, the actor said, "I was not that I didn't agree with marriage; but that, without being Catholic, I didn't agree with divorce. What I meant was that I simply could not see the point of being married if there was the remotest possibility of being divorced." The actress affirmed her convictions, stating that she had no idea they would end up dating when she first met filmmaker Taylor Hackford, who would later become her husband. Mirren said, "It was certainly not love at first sight."

They learned they had a working-class upbringing, a passion for adventurous travel, and a commitment to producing compelling films, and their working-together dynamic undoubtedly improved. Mirren became friends with, and a supporter of Hackford's two young kids from prior marriages despite never wanting children of her own. “I have to say that the thing I loved most about Taylor was his absolute, total commitment to his children,” she told AARP. When she was a young girl, Mirren pledged never to get married. But after dating for 12 years, she and Hackford were married. Mirren was 52  when she wed the love of her life. “I still sort of don’t believe in marriage,” she said.

She continued, "I always said I have nothing against marriage. It just wasn't to my taste, like turnips. It took me a very long time to come around to acquiring the taste. I just had to meet the right turnip," as per ENews.

“But that’s not to say I’m not incredibly happy to be married. And the one thing I thought I’d hate”—lots of girlish emphases here—“which was ‘my husband,’ I say all the time. I can’t wait for an opportunity to say it…you know: ‘My husband is over there at the moment.’ I love it,” she added. Mirren had earlier gone back to put an abrupt end to things since she was unable to imagine being with a married guy. But when Hackford acknowledged that he was divorced, she realized that a romance with the twice-divorced man was unavoidable. In her admission regarding the beginning of their love affair.

The Hundred-Foot Journey star admitted, "My fate was sealed," after she came to the realization that Hackford is the one for her. She met Rio, his eldest son, when they got to their rental house in the Hollywood Hills and learned about the shared custody of Hackford's youngest son, Alex. It took her longer than falling in love to adjust to her new life and the obligations that came with being someone's ride or die.
