After a coyote tried to drag away his toddler daughter, a quick-thinking heroic father jumped to her defenses. The entire incident was filmed on home security video, when on December 2, a coyote came wandering into the family's front yard based in the Woodland Hills district of Los Angeles. The terrifying video shows Ariel Eliyahuo securing his car when a coyote approaches and snatches up Ariya, a 2-year-old who had just stepped out of the car.

Eliyahuo reacts quickly after he hears Ariya's screams, immediately starting to yell at the coyote, succeeding to release Ariya from the coyote's hold. He then aggressively stomps on and is seen on the video hurling a water bottle at the animal. “I heard her screaming and and crying and I thought she fell down,” Eliyahuo told NBC4. He added that the coyote “came out of nowhere.”

Captain Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife claims that the coyote has not been captured. According to Foy, this was not the first time a coyote has been seen in the vicinity. “That dad absolutely did the right thing,” Foy tells TODAY. “Charging at the animal and shouting aggressively — he reacted perfectly.”

“There were a number of complaints in the immediate vicinity,'' he said. The coyote who attacked the toddler was probably still in the neighborhood and was the subject of recent complaints. “There were seven attacks in Los Angeles County this year, which is more than normal,” Foy says. “But the probability of being attacked is still very low.”

Coyotes are wandering communities in search of food in greater numbers. In view of the fact that they consume pet food, trash, rodents, and pets, Foy recommended people keep their pets indoors. In order to match saliva samples with any coyotes captured nearby, the toddler's clothing was gathered and transported to a forensic lab in Sacramento for testing. The coyote would be put down after a DNA match was established so that the animal's brain stem could be examined for rabies, he said.

The coyote in question, according to Foy, was "acting on predatory instincts." "This particular coyote had been on our radar for about two weeks," Foy says. "On the day of the attack, we had volunteers in the neighborhood going door-to-door trying to educate the community on how to best co-exist with wildlife."
