They were only married for three years when they decided to go their separate ways due to irreconcilable differences.
Jennifer Garner is one of the most adored and loved actresses in Hollywood. She starred in many hit movies like Catch Me If You Can, Daredevil, Elektra, Juno, and Dallas Buyers Club with her role in television drama Alias bagging her a Golden Globe.
Even though she is successful in her career, she had her fair share of ups and downs in her personal life with the worst being her divorce from ex Ben Affleck. But before Affleck and her fame, there was another man in her life.
Scott Foley and Garner met on the sets of television drama Felicity when she became a part of it for a two-episode arc. Their love grew from there and in 2000, the two tied the knot. The following year, ABC premiered Alias which blew her into stardom. After she reprised her role in Felicity's final season, she had become a household name, according to Instyle. Everything was happy, romantic, and exciting until the news of their split came.
Rumors of their split hit the tabloids when Garner turned up alone at the Oscars; just a week later it turned out to be true. Just three years into their marriage, the duo announced their separation in April 2003. According to the legal documents, March 23 was the day they officially split, and even though the 13 Going on 30 actress was all smiles for the camera at the Oscars, her beautiful smile hid all her pain.
Talking to The Sun years later, she opened up about her divorce with Foley and confessed that she regretted marrying him in her 20s. “Everyone reaches maturity at different times," she said and continued, "I wish I’d known to wait for marriage until I was 30 or over. I did marry in my twenties and I found divorce a crushing experience." She added, “I thought the divorce statistics would never apply to me. I was beyond heartbroken when they did.”
She once again recalled her good and bad times with Foley while talking to Allure and said, “Oh, [Scott’s] a great guy. We were full-on grown-ups, but looking back I'm aware we did not know what hit us. We didn't have a shot. He's a really good guy, and we just imploded." Even though it shook the duo's fans, the real reason for their divorce is not known, it is reported that it was in agreement.
If the Daredevil actress is to be believed, she blames the Hollywood lifestyle for her split with Foley. According to Instyle, she said that they “really were the victims of Hollywood.” She continued, “Everything is speeded up here — it is a fast-lane life, and if something is not working, it is considered best to end it without much thought. If we lived where I was brought up [West Virginia], we would probably still be together."
When she started dating her Alias co-star Michael Vartan, there were speculations of her infidelity but all were put to rest by none other than Foley when he said “nobody else was involved” in them going separate ways while talking to TV Guide, as reported by People. He continued, “Jennifer became a huge celebrity. She became a huge star, and she deserved everything she got. There was no other relationship, there was no infidelity, nothing. People get divorced, you know? Through no one’s fault and everyone’s fault.”
After Vartan, Garner started dating Affleck in 2004 and tied the knot with him the following year. In their ten years of marriage, she became a mother to three kids, Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Samuel, 8. In 2015 just a day after they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, the couple announced their separation as well following her ex's trouble with alcohol addiction.
While Garner recently split from her businessman boyfriend after dating him for two years, as reported by ET Online, on the other hand, Foley has been married for 13 years. He took a vow with his Grey’s Anatomy co-star Marika Domińczyk and they share three kids, Melina, 10, Keller, 8, and Konar, 5.
