Living in different cities, especially when Legend was on tour, the couple was forced to text and speak on the phone at the beginning of their relationship more than spending time in real life.
The Voice judge John Legend has serenaded beautiful love songs that people croon all over the world, but romance, for him, is not limited to the musical notes. Even in real life, the singer, songwriter, and producer constantly woos his wife of six years, Chrissy Teigen, with his gestures. While the couple didn't realize that they were each other's soulmates when they first met, there was certainly an immediate spark and attraction. Since then, they have become one of the power couples of Hollywood and their compatibility is what a chemical romance would look like.
They met for the first time in 2007 when Legend shot the music video for his song Stereo, with Teigen as his love interest in it. After the shoot was over, the duo spent time at the musician's hotel room, ate burgers, and couldn't keep their hands off each other. "I went to go say goodbye to him, to his hotel and we didn’t ever say goodbye that night," the model told Wendy Williams in 2014.
And yet, it wasn't love at first sight. Legend joked that it was at least lust at first sight, to Access Hollywood. The couple has always been honest about their beginnings. After that, the All of me singer went on a tour during which the couple texted and spoke to each other on the phone for almost a year.
"I fell in love with her over the phone because she is good with those 140 characters," Legend joked to ET. "[At the beginning of our relationship] we were texting a lot, and I started to see her sense of humor. We would talk on the phone, and I started to fall in love with how engaging and witty and funny she is," he said.
After the tour ended, the couple began dating seriously. "I think that’s when I really started to know that this was the kind of person I wanted to be around a lot," Legend told ET. While Teigen lived in LA, he was in New York, so, they took a lot of trips, including one to Mexico and Lake Como, Italy, they told Oprah. "Once we started spending more time together between tour stops and all this other stuff, we realized we had such a connection."
The realization that she was the one did not come to him immediately. "I’m more cautious than that. I wasn’t like, 'This is the woman I’m going to marry' from day one. For me I’m the kind of person who needs to grow into that feeling. It was probably a couple of years in when I could already see us being together forever," the musician told LA Confidential. And the model also said that she wasn't one to pressure him to get married. She was just happy to be with him, she told Cosmo.
"I let him be himself for a while. The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, There’s so much more out there. I played it cool for a long time. Never once did I ask, 'What are we?' Marriage was never my goal, because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him," said the mom-of-two.
When it was time to propose, Legend took Teigen on a trip to the Maldives in December 2011. He had the surprise ready for her and the TSA almost ruined it by asking him to show them what was in the box, the ring was in, while Teigen was right next time him. It all turned out well in the end.
"We get to the Maldives and he had planned this beautiful Christmas... And this waiter comes out with a silver dome for dessert…So he opens up the dome and a ton of arugula falls out and then I kind of fish in it…And I see the little box and then you know, your heart stops and you get so excited," Teigen said. "There was no big grand speech or anything. I think it was just very lovely and sweet," according to Time.
The romantic songwriter while debuting his song All of me during a June 2013 performance on Oprah’s Next Chapter dedicated the song to his then-fiancee. When the model heard it for the first time they brought her to tears. She starred in the music video with Legend which was shot in Lake Como in Italy.
The couple had their wedding at Lake Como on September 14, 2013, and later wed legally in New York. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Luna, in 2016 and their second child, a son named Miles, in 2018.
Recently, Teigen gushed about her husband, who flew from London to L.A. just to make her feel better. "I do not normally brag about John, as it is my schtick to make fun of him always, but he flew from London to LA instead of London to DC to have dinner with me and watch love island UK because I haven’t been feeling like myself lately. Just a few hours but it meant a lot. Thank u," she wrote. "AND he had to fly on his least favorite airline. That is love," said she, according to Glamour.
