They are one of the longest married couples in Hollywood and an inspiration to their fans for the dedication towards each other.
A good relationship is one where partners can trust and rely on each other completely. The sense of safety and comfort we feel in their presence makes it easy for us to take on our scariest demons. The support we give each other only propels the other up instead of bringing them down. And, you know that with them by your side, you will be able to overcome the hardest challenges.
One of the perks of long relationships is that we get the time to know and understand each other well. The shared experiences strengthen us together even when things are hard. You know that you will together come out of it. For Kelly Preston, who has been married to John Travolta since 1991, her husband is the most dependable man, who makes everything alright.
The long-term couple met way back at a screen test for their 1989 comedy, The Experts, when Preston was still married to actor Kevin Gage, according to PEOPLE. For Travolta, it was love at first sight but when she was asked about it on Watch What Happens Live, Preston said, "Kinda." "Well, I was not that happily married, let’s put it that way," she continued. "I was really with the wrong person."
Travolta said that he felt an "immediate chemistry" with her. However, she wasn't ready for the kind of commitment he offered immediately. Once Preston got divorced from Gage in 1987, she dated George Clooney and then Charlie Sheen, but lasting love came with Travolta.
In 1991, he proposed to her in the most romantic way while vacationing in Gstaad, Switzerland, on New Year's eve. The Gotti actress "screamed" when he popped the question. Even their wedding took place in the city of love, Paris, followed by a ceremony in Florida. Soon after, Preston was quoted as saying by PEOPLE, "We plan to have some babies. We’re practicing right now. This could be barefoot and pregnant for the next 10 years."
Their families were also ecstatic for them. Preston's mother, Linda Carlson, director of the Hawaii Mental Health Center in Honolulu, had said that her daughter told her that she likes the bad boy-kind but the Grease actor was "kind and loving and generous." "I just thank God. That’s what she wants and that’s what she needs," she said.
Since then, it's been more than 28 years and they have been through a lot together, including the loss of a child. They had three children together. Ella Bleu, Jett, who tragically passed away in 2009 at age 16, according to Instyle, and Benjamin, their youngest, who was born two years after Jett passed away. He is very close to his parents.
"He’s given the house a renewed spirit and purpose," Travolta added to PEOPLE in 2011. In fact, the Face Off actor loves to spend time with this little buddy and teaches him dance moves, which they posted on Instagram as well. The young Travolta is a complete copy of his father and quite talented with his legs. After all, he's learning from the best.
Preston's message to Travolta on their 28th wedding anniversary showed the kind of man she had by her side. "To my dearest Johnny, the most wonderful man I know," she began. "You have given me hope when I have felt lost, loved me patiently and unconditionally… made me laugh harder than any other human being possible... shared the most beautiful highs and at times lows."
She added, "You’re a dream Daddio and make life so much fun!! I trust my love with you implicitly... with you I know I will always be okay no matter what happens... I love you forever and completely. Happy 28th Anniversary."
Preston acknowledges that it takes a lot to keep a marriage together for almost three decades. They continue to support each other in their work and make sure to take out time to celebrate the special days together.
"Keep checking in and keep growing and changing. Keep doing things, just the two of you," the actress told CloserWeekly. Meanwhile, Travolta says that the secret to their marriage is, "We really care deeply about each other and we protect each other — and we keep [our relationship] up to date."
