When it comes to women who have achieved huge success despite having a difficult childhood, Julia Roberts is one name that comes to mind. Despite facing immense trauma when she was just a child, Roberts has managed to overcome the challenges and establish herself as one of the most successful actresses in the industry based on her talent and affable personality. Some might say this could be because of the person who raised her to be the strong woman she is today, her mother.
The actress chooses not to speak about it often, and instead always has that radiant smile on her face. But when on her mom's death anniversary, however, Julia Roberts shared a beautiful photograph of the two together.
Betty Lou Bredemus was battling lung cancer before she passed away in February 2015, at the age of 80. The actress captioned the black and white picture with her mother,, "My mum. #misshereveryday."
While Roberts is a doting mother herself, her childhood was not the kind any child should have. She suffered abuse and domestic violence in the hands of her stepfather Michael Motes who was also very cruel to her mother. Betty parted ways from Motes citing "cruel treatment" in her divorce petition and she has also gone on to confess that her marriage was "the biggest mistake I ever made, "Mail Online reported.
Later, Julia and Betty lived together until she passed away in 2015. In a conversation with PEOPLE, Julia had said that "I think about her all the time." And with this heartwarming post on her fifth death anniversary, she has shown that she might not talk about her mom all the time, but she is always around her.
As a child, the Pretty Woman actress had suffered abuse and violence at the hands of her stepfather. But the one person who helped shield her from the abuse and tried to protect her was her mom. The Academy Award winner has been quite private about her off-screen life but on rare occasions, she did talk about the incredibly close bond she shared with her mother.
“My mom worked a full-time job and raised three girls pretty much on her own,” she said during an interview with PEOPLE. “My brother [actor Eric Roberts] is older, so he was gone and out of the house. She never showed the strain of it.” The 52-year-old actress, who is now a mother of two herself revealed that her kids, too, talk about her a lot. “The kids talk about her a lot."
“It’s funny because her name was Betty and I feel like lately, she just crosses my mind, and I’ll turn and I see something that says ‘Betty,’ just unexpectedly. In Africa, I saw the name twice when I was thinking about her."
When she started a family with her husband Daniel Moder, Roberts found herself turning towards her mom for advice and marveling at her for bringing them up despite the hurdles she faced. “I was like, ‘Mom, how did you do this?'” the actress recalled. “And instead of saying, ‘Well, you just have to apply yourself and it takes effort,’ she goes, ‘It’s called daycare, honey.’ And I was so appreciative and so grateful she didn’t tell me some sage, b$llshit story about what it’s like to be a great mother.”
