"That's something I learned from both my stepdad and my grandfather," he says about chivalry.
Hollywood actor and musician, Justin Timberlake isn't just bringing sexy back — he's bringing back chivalry too. A gentleman from head to toe, his values and the way he treats women like a queen can have any woman swooning in his presence. But if there's anyone who's lucky enough to have a man like him, it's none other than his beautiful and talented actress wife, Jessica Biel. And he's been a gentleman since before they even started dating.
It was in 2006 when Timberlake first met actress and model Jessica Biel at a surprise party, according to his memoir Hindsight & All the Things I Can't See in Front of Me, reported by ET Online. “When I met Jess, it was undeniable how beautiful she is. I made some sort of sarcastic comment, really dry,” he recalled, quoted Goal Cast. “Nobody got it except her. She laughed, and I noticed, all of a sudden, and in the way where you wonder if a person’s like you, if they have a very dry, dark sense of humor, too.” But despite liking her and her similar sense of humor, he didn't make a move on her.
Obviously, that was not the end of their story. A few years later in 2007, when they were both attending the Golden Globes award ceremony, they happened to lock eyes with each other and that was when the true sparks started flying.
However, the way they started their relationship is nothing like your Hollywood romance movies. Though he had gotten her number, he actually decided to ask her permission before asking her out on a date. "My friend called Jessica and Jessica said yes, and so I called her," said the former 'N Sync member.
"I did it the old fashioned way—by telephone," Timberlake told the Hollywood Foreign Press at a press conference in 2012, according to Us Weekly. "That's something I learned from both my stepdad and my grandfather—that there is a thing called chivalry and it doesn't have to die with the birth of the internet. The way I see it, if you're asking a girl out on a date, it's only right to do it in a way that she can hear your voice. I had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes. But I have a fair amount of tenacity and if I want something I stick to it. And in the end she agreed."
Though the two were dating each other, in the beginning, they weren't exclusive. "We were both still seeing other people, keeping ourselves safe from getting hurt, from really putting ourselves out there," the 38-year-old recalled in his book. "It took a bit for both of us to admit to ourselves that were were [sic] really, really that into each other. When I came back from tour, we spent a month together. After that, I said, 'I really want to be exclusive.' And, somehow, she said, 'So do I.'"
But even after going exclusive, they decided to take it slow, which was helped along by the fact they had their careers keeping them busy. In an interview with talk show host James Corden, Biel revealed that her husband never pushed for physical intimacy. "We didn't kiss for a very long time because he was on tour, and we were talking on the phone, like normal pre-teens do," said the 37-year-old.
Sadly though, in March 2011 couple parted ways. They had done their best to battle the onslaught of rumors of breakups and affairs but decided to split up. Yet, the Mirror singer was all praise for Biel. "She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life. In my 30 years, she is the most special person, OK? So I protect it, and until somebody shows me what would be more fulfilling at this point, that's what I have to do," he said. "I don't want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me—for instance, her," added the actor. And like the gentleman he is, he was tight-lipped about the details of the split.
But true love has its way and Cupid wasn't going to let the two of them be separate. Within just a few months, they were back together. By January 2012 they were engaged and on October 19 the same year, they exchanged their vows.
Ever since getting married, they have proved and shown the world what true love really is. And in 2015, they introduced baby Silas into their lives. Vocal about their relationship, the actor couple are constantly showing off adorable moments on their social media accounts.
"You have taught me so much about what true love means. I can't put into words what these last five years have meant to me," Timberlake wrote on their wedding anniversary in 2017. And they work hard to keep their marriage strong. Opening up about her marriage on Today in 2018, Biel proclaimed, "Honestly, I just really feel like you have to work hard. That doesn’t change if you work at home or in an office or you’re on a tour. It doesn’t change, the work doesn’t change."
Praising his wife in his memoir, the Friends With Benefits actor wrote, “I have such an admiration for her, especially seeing her as a mother now. But I had admiration for her before. She’s a very good writer. She’s a poet. She’s a tremendous actor. She’s funny. Very funny. And she’s one of the most patient people I’ve ever met.” He concluded saying, “She changed me. She changed my life.”
Recently, in an interview with ET Online, the father-of-one said that his wife is truly the one for him. “It’s like, once you find that person, it’s like a baptism, where you’re like, ‘I can’t go back,’ you know what I mean?” Well, his chivalrous nature certainly paid off. Here's to a long-lasting happy marriage.
