It has been 12 years since Kate Winslet found the love of her life. And their story is no less than a fairytale. Winslet and her now husband Edward Abel Smith met in 2010 at Richard Branson's private holiday venue, Necker Island. Winslet was vacationing with her children when lightning struck the house and caught a massive fire. "I met my husband in a house fire," Winslet recalled, as reported by Entertainment Tonight

Smith was staying on the island in an adjacent residence. "He was the only dude to have a head torch and a pair of shoes, everyone else left everything behind," Winslet said. "I took a bra and passports and my children."

"So I married him!" she added, laughing. "I was like, 'I'll go for the guy with a head torch!'" Winslet got engaged to Smith in the summer of 2012 and got married at a private ceremony later that year. They welcomed their first child in December 2013.

In an interview with New York Times, speaking about Smith, she said, "He didn’t particularly plan on meeting and marrying a woman who is in the public eye and therefore having been so judged."

In 2021, Winslet received the Emmy award for outstanding actress for her role in Mare of Easttown. She shared that it was special for her that her husband was there with her. "When I was here 10 years ago with Mildred Pierce we had actually just met," she told reporters in Emmy's press room. "I knew that I was going to spend my life with this man."

Winslet continued, "We're getting to the Emmys and I was just so in a whirlwind of having just met him that I couldn't even concentrate and I vividly remember making an absolutely appalling speech because I was not on planet earth because I had fallen head over heels in love with this person who I just met. So to have him here, it's really quite special, " as reported by PEOPLE. "My children — Mia, Joe, and Bear — are the greatest people in the world. And my husband Ned, who I get to hold hands with for the rest of my life," she said.

Smith is a great support for her. "He's the superhot, superhuman, stay-at-home. He looks after us, especially me," she told NYT. Winslet and Smith live at a beachside mansion in Sussex. Along with Bear, Winslet has two children, Mia, and Joe, from her previous marriages. The estate was also used as a location for her movie Blackbird in 2018 as she didn't want to travel far, according to Sussex Live
