The couple met in 2006 and tied the knot in June 2019; they welcomed their baby in February 2021.
Katharine McPhee welcomed her first child with husband David Foster last month and it looks like the pair couldn't be happier. Music producer David Foster who has written classic hits like Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing and Peter Cetera's Glory of Love is going to be a father for the sixth time while this is the first time the Smash actress is becoming a mom. According to EW, the couple first met in 2006 when Foster mentored her and other contestants on season 5 of American Idol. The pair tied the knot in June 2019. 71-year-old Foster is already father to five daughters. There's Sara, 40, Erin, 38, and Jordan, 34, whom he shares with second wife Rebecca Dyer, and daughters Allison, 50, and Amy, 47, from previous relationships. Prior to McPhee, he was married to Yolanda Hadid, the mother of models Gigi and Bella Hadid.
36-year-old McPhee gave birth to a baby boy in February 2021. Appearing on Today with Hoda and Jenna this Friday, the singer reveals her son's name: Rennie David Foster. "Okay, well, his name, we haven't said anything. My husband probably will kill me for saying it, but his name is Rennie David Foster. We picked Rennie 'cause I'd actually been in labor for a while. We didn't have a name picked out. We had a couple names, but my husband was on a text chain with his sisters and one of his sisters suggested an old family name," the new mom shared. "It was his great-grandfather's name, his great-uncle's name, so it has a long history in his family. My husband said, 'Hi, Ren Foster,' and so we said, 'That's a good name. It's a strong name.'" The star whose new Netflix sitcom Country Comfort premieres soon on the streaming service admitted she does love being a mom already adding that life as a mom is "the sweetest; it's just the best. I'm in heaven. It's really been amazing," according to People.
The former American Idol contestant has been prepping for mom-life in advance and always knew what values she wanted to imbibe in her child. Appearing on an episode of the Women on Top Podcast while she was pregnant, McPhee revealed the sex of her baby, along with sharing what she planned to teach her son. "Now that I am having a boy, there are different things I need to worry about to teach him versus the things I would be thinking about with a girl," she said. "But it's kind of refreshing because I feel like I don't need to think about those societal 'this is the way you look.' I think men have different issues and different things to worry about."
As for her personal relationship, the new parents have often been picked on for their 34-year age difference but that doesn't bother them. Foster himself has acknowledged the age gap between them and stated that "haters are always going to be haters. But, the way I've resolved it, there's 10 things that can bring a marriage down," he said in a previous interview with PEOPLE. "There's infidelity, there's geography, there's finances, there's kids ... There's so many things that can bring a marriage down. Only one of the 10 is an age difference. So if we feel like we have the other nine right, that we're really solid on the other nine, the one is not going to break us up."
Even his daughters adore McPhee. Daughter Amy spoke of the time when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and "when I had my mastectomy, my dad and Kat flew in for that and stayed with me. She's amazing. Kat is not a trophy wife — she has a lot to say, she's interesting, she has a fantastic career and she's nobody's trophy. You don't even think about the age difference when they're together because they both are emotionally the same age, which is either 36 or 70, I don't know. Sometimes my dad is super young and sometimes Kat is super old." Erin, Foster's other daughter, joked that they have only one problem with their stepmom. "Our biggest issue with [Katharine] is how hot she is. Her body is insane. When she comes over for family Sundays, I'm like, 'Do not get in a bikini.' My husband's always like, 'Kat, get in the pool!' And I'm like, 'Simon.'" Foster's daughters confess that McPhee has only been a positive addition to their lives.
