David Foster was just 20 when his first child was born. He is a father of five biological daughters and is a stepdad to numerous children.
Hollywood's men are not shy of embracing fatherhood late in their lives. Some are first-timers and others have done it multiple times previously, and they still want more. Celebrity dads are leading the way in having big families. Many of them are growing their brood when they are in their late 50s, 60s, and even 70s. Richard Gere and Steve Martin (a first-timer) are some of the older dads of Hollywood who are giving the younger generation a run for their money.
70-year-old David Foster, for instance, has been married five times and has five daughters. However, that didn't deter him from expanding the family. Married to 36-year-old actress Katharine McPhee, he is set to become a dad for the sixth time. The Smash actress and Foster have been married since June 2019 and this will be her first child, according to People.com.
Foster is already father to daughters Sara, 39, Erin, 38, and Jordan, 34, whom he shares with second wife Rebecca Dyer, and daughters Allison, 50, and Amy, 46, from previous relationships. He has been previously married to B.J. Cook, Rebecca Dyer, Linda Thompson, and Yolanda Hadid.
He was only 20 when his oldest child Allison was born and unfortunately, she had to be given up for adoption. The Grammy award-winning producer connected with her when she was 30 and he 50, according to Daily Mail. His second child was born to Cook, a singer-songwriter.
People.com confirmed McPhee's pregnancy after spotting the couple in Montecito, California. They were grabbing lunch together and shopping for baby items. McPhee and he met for the first time in 2006 on American Idol. They met as a mentor and mentee when he mentored her and other contestants during season 5.
Foster's longest marriage was to Thompson, also a songwriter. She was previously married to Caitlyn Jenner, who used to be known as Bruce Jenner. For McPhee, this is the second marriage. She was previously married to Nick Cokas from 2008 to 2016.
Foster is also a grandfather to seven. Allison, who works for the David Foster Foundation, has two children; Amy, a musician, is a mother of three; and Sara Foster is a mother to two kids. Foster is also connected to the Hadid sisters and Brody and Brandon Jenner, through his previous marriages, according to People.com. McPhee is unlikely to ever feel alone with Foster's massive family.
Foster's fourth daughter, Erin, previously told People.com that they jokingly refer to McPhee as "Mommy!" and that she has been a positive addition to the family. "Interestingly, the age difference has played a role in a positive way," Erin said. "Our dad comes from a generation where women are more passive. He is also passive about his feelings. Kat has really pushed him to open up. We could get into a fight, and then Kat's like, 'No, you have to pick up the phone, call your daughter back.' She's a facilitator, which is really important. She pushes him to be more emotional and more vulnerable," she added.
McPhee is younger than four of Foster's daughters and he applauds her for navigating her way through his complicated family. "I think she navigates it really, really well," he said. "And so do they. Because they could be horrible. It sure makes it easier for me that they get along. It's not a fleeting thing, either. It's been a few years," he added.
Foster and McPhee's paths have also been crisscrossing in strange ways. She has known him since she was 21 and he produced her first single. "He's been really good to me. People can say whatever they want," she said to Health.com in 2017.
He had attended her wedding to Cokas in February 2008 and helped her perform a rendition of Natalie Cole's Unforgettable, according to People.com. They were first spotted together as a couple in 2017 and it was Erin who confirmed that they were seeing each other by posting about them on Instagram. They got engaged in 2018 and married in June 2019.
