Making a relationship last is not always in our control. We could give it our best but when there are two people involved situations cannot be dealt single-handedly. While we do get married with the hopes of "forever," when it starts taking away more than what it gives one should try to save themselves from withering away.
Katy Perry did not, however, get closure or an acknowledgment of her feelings when her first husband Russell Brand decided to end the relationship with her, reports LATimes. The British comedian and the global sensation first met at the MTV movie awards in 2009 and started dating right after that. In fact, their chemistry did elate their fans when they publicly showed admiration for each other.
They did not wait long and tied the knot in 2010 in a much-publicized ceremony in India. But the coming together of two souls was not meant to last forever. They decided to amicably part ways in 2012 citing irreconcilable differences. But in a 2013 interview, Perry dished out a rather heartbreaking detail of their relationship which would have been unfathomably hard for her. She revealed that Brand had texted her asking for a divorce moments before she went on stage for a performance and that she never heard back from him ever again.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry said. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011."
The Roar hitmaker also went on to say that she tried to give her best efforts to the relationship but she started feeling uncomfortable when Brand started making jokes about her in front of a live audience.
“Hysterical in some ways. Until he started making jokes about me and he didn’t know I was in the audience, because I had come to surprise him at one of his shows. So. Hysterical to a point. I mean, I have to claim my own responsibility in things. I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie,” she said, referring to the documentary “Katy Perry: Part of Me.”
“That wasn’t edited to leave footage out — there wasn’t any footage of him.”
She also explained that initially, she blamed herself for the unfortunate end of her relationship. But she later realized that it has nothing to do with her and she decided to move on. This also shows how a strong woman does not hang on the negative feelings and learns to let go. Perry also proved that at times, you cannot blame yourself for every unfortunate occurrence in your life and if you don't be kind to yourself, who will?
“At first when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she continued. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that.”
She went on to date fellow crooner John Mayer after but that did not last long too. It is as if the best was waiting for her and not letting her settle for anything less than what she deserves was the right thing to do. And it finally happened. In 2016, she met actor Orlando Bloom and things started getting intimate between them. After three years of on and off dating they got engaged last year. Bloom proposed to her in a fairy tale fashion and that shows how much he values her in his life.
Perry later spoke about the proposal and revealed that they had dinner together and then Bloom flew her away in a helicopter to pop the question, reports People. “I got on a helicopter and he asked me to marry him, and then we landed on this building and then went downstairs and my family and friends were there and the most flowers you’ve ever seen. It’s like when Kanye does that for Kim, you’re like, ‘Oh my God!' And I was like, ‘Oh my God!'”
However, they want to be completely sure before taking a huge step as marriage. During an appearance on Today, Bloom said, “It’s important to me that we are aligned—I’ve been married and divorced and I don’t want to do it again... And we’re both fully aware of that. She’s remarkable and so I’m always so impressed with that and I’m encouraged.”
They welcomed their first child together in August 2020.
