"Kyra felt really strongly that, when she started to have children, she needed to be there for them," Kevin Bacon said about Kyra Sedgwick.
Kevin Bacon was recently spotted with his oldest child reportedly going for breakfast in Los Angeles' Los Feliz neighborhood. The appearance is pretty rare as Bacon and his 33-year-old son Travis aren't often seen in public together. He and wife-of-35 years Kyra Sedgwick share two children: Travis and daughter Sosie, 30.
As both their kids are adults, they live away from the couple. Sedgwick opened up about her own two kids leaving home years ago to Good Morning America. "I think it's a real crushing blow, honestly, when they leave you. It's the only job that you have that if you do it well, you get fired. As a mom, if you do your job well, your children leave you," she pointed out.
Despite it being "hard" and "weird" she said she is "grateful to have adult children now, but I think initially it's like, 'Wait, what are you talking about? I birthed you and I took care of you your whole life and now you're leaving me!' It felt wrong."
As for how Bacon and Sedgwick met it happened way back in 1987 when they filmed Lemon Sky together. It wasn't long until they welcomed their first child. Just a year after getting married, their son Travis was born. "The minute I had a child I was like, ‘God, I want to make sure there’s a good place here for him,’” Sedgwick told Glamour in 2019. "[Kevin and I] are both people who are spurred into action, and we like to be part of giving back. It's our responsibility."
Bacon is honest about how much his wife has done to raise the children. "She’s made a lot more sacrifices than I’ve made. Kyra felt really strongly that, when she started to have children, she needed to be there for them." She was the one who made a strong commitment to being a parent first. "In many cases, because of the kids, she would make decisions careerwise that weren’t the best for her career. We kept staying in New York because we wanted to raise them in New York, but there was more work in Los Angeles," he confessed at the time.
The two share that the reason their relationship has lasted so long is because of honest communication. “We've been married for so long and there are no secrets. But I never in a million years thought there would be sides to Kevin that I'm still learning," Sedgwick told Redbook in 2008. "[Our relationship] is like a treasure; there are layers and layers of it. I'm constantly amazed that we are still surprised and interested in each other."
