"You teach them to be independent—and the sad part about that is they become that," said Costner.
Kevin Costner, theYellowstone star, thinks that he is just like any other father. "I work as a provider. I'm a father and I'm a husband, but the world doesn't revolve around me," he told PEOPLE.
When not working, his days are quite normal. "I'm living and on the freeway with my wife, getting the kids to their stuff or I'm waiting for them to come out of a party. I'm just twiddling my thumbs. People have a wrong idea about how my life works."
Costner, 67, has been married to his wife, Christine, for 18 years. They have three children together: sons Cayden, 15, and Hayes, 13, and daughter Grace, 12. He also has four older kids from his previous relationships: daughters Annie and Lily, and sons Joe and Liam.
Costner revealed that he is happiest being a father. "You've got to get down on the ground and play with them," he said. "And you teach them to be independent—and the sad part about that is they become that. I'm like any other parent: I'm trying to figure it out."
His son, Hayes, has a small role in his upcoming fourth-part western epic Horizon. "He's very good," said Costner. "But I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me. And the same thing for Cayden, the same thing for Grace. 'This is really neat. You should come to be with me.'"
Other than being present for his children, Costner is part of some great projects. His new docuseries with Fox Nation, Yellowstone: One-Fifty, debuted on Sunday and his hit Paramount Network series, Yellowstone, has returned for its fifth season.
The docuseries explores the history and wildlife of Yellowstone National Park in honor of its 150th anniversary. "Yellowstone One-Fifty exemplifies the superior creative content that we strive to deliver exclusively to our subscribers. We are thrilled to collaborate with an iconic actor and filmmaker of Kevin Costner's caliber on this project," FOX Nation president Jason Klarman said in a press release, according to Honey Parenting.
Cole Hauser, Costner's co-star in Yellowstone, told Fox News that he finds the father-of-seven inspiring. "Before an actor or as a creative soul is just him as a person. He's from the kind of area in California [that I'm from]. He's from Ventura. I'm from Santa Barbara. And getting to know him over the last five years, I mean I've learned a lot about just being a gentleman on set and just a class act... He's got [a] a family. I have three kids and a wonderful wife. And he's just someone to look up to in my opinion. And then creatively, his storytelling, his want and desire to continue to push the envelope as a... creator... it's inspiring."
