Kevin Costner’s Wife “Wasn’t Happy” About His Busy Work Schedule Before Filing for Divorce | “Been Very Hard for Her”

"Since it didn't look like that would change and likely could get worse, it caused tension at home," the source said.

One of the reasons for Kevin Costner's recent split could be because of his busy work schedule. Kevin Costner’s wife, Christine Baumgartner, has filed for divorce after 18 years of marriage but the Oscar winner did not want his marriage to end this way. Baumgartner has asked for shared custody of their three kids in the paperwork for separation. The couple tied the knot in September 2004 and share three children: Cayden Wyatt, 16; Hayes Logan, 14; and Grace Avery, 12. The 49-year-old placed their separation date as April 11. A prenuptial agreement regarding spousal support, legal bills, and property is mentioned in the actor/director's filings.

A source told PEOPLE that while the Yellowstone actor, 68, "knew" Baumgartner was "unhappy," her divorce filing came as an "unpleasant surprise." The insider said, "Christine wants them to spend family time at their Santa Barbara home." They added, "During filming, Kevin is not around very much. His absence has been very hard for her. Christine doesn't want him to throw himself into another project. He has been obsessed with filming Horizon since last year. She wasn't happy about it."

According to insiders, the actor has perhaps made choices where it seemed he prioritized his career over his family life leaving loved ones feeling neglected. A separate entertainment source also affirmed that fact telling the outlet that "at times, his career has taken precedence over his home life. Kevin hasn't been home very much for quite some time due to filming, the popularity of Yellowstone, and the time necessary for his other projects. He has been in demand. All of this success and excitement over the new project probably took his attention away from his family more than he realized." His wife felt that things would not get any better and decided to call it quits. "Since it didn't look like that would change and likely could get worse, it caused tension at home," the entertainment source shared.

Another source claiming to be a longtime friend told Page Six, “Kevin was very surprised by Christine’s actions, he obviously doesn’t want the divorce and he would take her back. It’s disappointing, he loves her and he loves his children.” The insider also denied allegations of cheating. “There was no issue of cheating at all,” they said defiantly.

The Bodyguard star spoke fondly of his 49-year-old wife as recently as November of last year. "My wife does things that just completely... It just helps. The house is prettier because of her. Everything is warmer because of her. There's these little things that she does and I think it's the power of love, but that she makes her home that way," he previously told PEOPLE.
