Michael and Catherine, the Hollywood power couple and parents to two children, "danced in" their 20th year together on November 18. and they received some sane advice from the patriarch of the Douglas clan.
They are one of the longest-married power couples in Hollywood and their love is getting stronger year after year. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, 50, marked her 19th wedding anniversary with Michael Douglas, 75, on November 18 by sharing a throwback photo to their younger days.
The black and white photo from their days of dating shows the couple at their glamorous best, like young kids dancing the night away. The actress also shared a beautiful letter given to them by her father-in-law, Kirk Douglas, 102, whose romance with his wife, Anne Buydens, is another epic story. They have been married for 65 years.
"Dancing in to our 20th year! Happy Anniversary my love," Zeta-Jones captioned the series. "Such a beautiful letter from my father in law. I am touched," she added with smiley emojis.
The letter from Kirk Douglas had a message, especially for his son. It said, "Happy anniversary! Michael, you learned a very important lesson to stay married you must obey your wife! Keep practicing what I do with my wife." He signed off the printed letter with what appeared to say "Daddy Kirk," according to Daily Mail.
The Zorro actress and the Basic Instinct actor met in 1998 when they were introduced to each other by her co-star, Antonio Banderas, and his now ex-wife, Melanie Griffith, at the Deauville Film Festival in France, according to Daily Mail. He proposed to her in 1999 and a year later, they were married, according to Us Weekly. The Fatal Attraction actor said during an episode of The Johnathan Ross Show in 2016 that he knew 30 minutes after meeting her that she was the one. He told her he was going to be the father of her children. And, that promise did come true. They have two children, Carys Zeta Douglas, 16, and Dylan Michael Douglas, 19.
The couple has proven time and time again that age is only a number when it comes to love. They even share the same birthday, September 25 - only, 25 years apart. "Catherine, my wife, and I have the same birthday," he explained on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2019. "Twenty-five years apart, the same day, but who’s counting?" He also said, "Having a younger bride makes me feel good on one side."
While the age-gap is no problem, there are always challenges in any long-term relationship, like the Douglas-Zeta-Jones'. The Chicago actress opened up about it during a Today show appearance in November 2017.
"I think it’s just unfathomable to me that you would be with one person for 18 years, and things are not rosy every day. They’re just not," she said. "My mother and father were married for 52 years and they were a wonderful blueprint for me, because I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly with them, and they’re still going strong," she said.
In 2013, the couple had separated for a short time to "evaluate and work on their marriage," their reps had said, according to Us Weekly. Together, the couple had battled many challenges including Douglas's throat cancer diagnosis in 2010, Zeta-Jones's ongoing struggle with bipolar II disorder, and Douglas' son Cameron's drug addiction and incarceration. To go through so much together and come out unscathed is nearly impossible. So, the couple took some time and reunited the same year, according to CloserOnline.
