The veteran Hollywood actor rang in his 103rd year with his family and loved ones on December 9, the same day his eldest son received a nomination for Golden Globe as well.
What's better than having a loving family, being able to spend your birthday with them, and being healthy even when you're past the age of 100? Veteran Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas turned 103 on December 9 and the Douglas family didn't leave any stones unturned to make him feel special.
He received sweet tributes from his entire family on his special day, including from his son, Michael Douglas, daughter-in-law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and their children. For Michael, the day turned out to be doubly important as he received a Golden Globe nomination again for his show The Kominsky Method.
Initially, he shared a photo of him planting a kiss on his father's forehead. The tender moment between Douglas' eldest child and his 103-year-old father shows how deep their bond goes. "Happy birthday Dad!" he wrote. "You are a living legend and your entire family sends you all the love in their hearts! #KirkDouglas #103" the Basic Instinct actor posted on Instagram.
The same day, he got the news about his nomination at the Golden Globe awards and shared his gratitude. He also added a reference to his father in that message. "12.9.2019 what a great day! Thank you to the HFPA for the @GoldenGlobes nomination, and for making my Dad proud on his 103rd birthday! #TheKominskyMethod" he said.
Michael's wife of 19 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones, also shared her wishes and love for her "pappy." She shared a throwback photo of the two of them where Douglas was sitting on Zeta-Jones' lap.
"This guy on my knee is 103!!!!! Happy Birthday Pappy!!! I love you with all my heart," she wrote on Instagram, according to People.
The grandchildren also followed suit in wishing the legendary actor with "class". "They say time changes everything. And to some degree I agree. However, class is timeless, and the undisputed king of class is Kirk Douglas! Happy birthday Pappy 103!!! I love you" wrote Dylan Douglas, Michael and Zeta-Jones' son.
While the eldest grandson, Cameron, who is Michael and Diandra Luker's son, wrote, "Happy Birthday Pappy...you are a gift to the world; a guiding light and source of inspiration to me. I Love you. #103 to #infinity"
Granddaughter Carys Douglas shared a photo of the legendary actor, herself, and her niece, Lua, who is Cameron's one-year-old daughter. The toddler born into the great dynasty of actors brought her great-grandfather a star balloon on his birthday, according to Daily Mail.
"Happy birthday to my wonderful Pappy! 103 years of sharing your love and light to the world, being the best grandfather, and being a complete badass. I love you more than words can say," wrote Carys.
A few weeks before the senior Douglas' birthday, his son had revealed how the centenarian no longer cares for having a big birthday party.
"Well, it’s like, so 100. Okay, so he was 100. Big birthday, big birthday. The trouble is, when you’re 100, you don’t really want a big birthday," the Basic Instinct actor explained. "I threw a big party for him, it was great," said the 75-year-old. Then, the next year also turned out to be a big bash. "101. You know, 'OK, let’s have a nice party.' 'Again? I don’t…' 'Dad, it’s 101 years old. You have to have a birthday.' 102…" he continued. However, the Paths of Glory actor just wanted to have dinner with the family in 2019, and it looks like he got what he wished for.
In typical Douglas family fashion, his family got together for a quiet gathering, with family members walked into his home with Kirk-themed balloons and presents on his birthday, Daily Mail reported. One large yellow balloon read, "Happy Birthday, Aged to Perfection." He was given a Spartacus themed cake to cut at the family event, where his beloved Anne Buydens was also present along with other family members.
