"Dax helped me learn that I don't have it all figured out," Kristen Bell said.
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been married for almost 10 years. In an interview with ET Online Bell expressed her views on marriage and simple things that you can keep it going. She just has two words that can help a couple keep their relationship healthy and lasting. "Stay vulnerable," Bell shared. "At least my secret, she said adding that one has to be vulnerable "when we don't want to be. That's what works for us."
Bell and Sheard have two daughters, Lincoln, 9, and Delta, 7. But it was not all so smooth when it started in 2007. When the two first met, Shepard was suspicious of Bell's "unbridled happiness." However, a few weeks later they started to feel closer and the equation between them changed. Though they both fell in love, there have been many bumps along the way. "There were hurdles, things she didn't trust about me, things I didn't trust about her. I just kept going back to 'This person has the thing I want, and I have to figure out how we can exist peacefully,'" Shepard told Good Housekeeping. The two are big proponents of therapy. He added, "So we started [seeing a therapist together] right away."
The couple is also open and honest with fans about using a third party to help them negotiate relationship lows. “Every couple of years, we’re like, ‘We’re being very antagonistic towards each other,’ and we don’t want that,” Bell told People in 2021. “We go back to therapy and figure out what I’m not doing that’s best for you and what you’re not doing that’s best for me, and how we can serve this team goal better.”
Bell agrees and always said she just wants to be truthful. She said, "Dax helped me learn that I don't have it all figured out. Sometimes that's the greatest gift someone can give you." Confessing that their fights were ugly, she said to Insider, "We'd get in a fight because we'd fight a lot, and I'd yell something and then slam the bedroom door, then I'd slam the front door, then I'd get in my car and then I'd skid out the driveway and I would sit around the corner in my car and it felt so good and I realized how incredibly toxic it was only after he pointed it out." The Veronica Mars actress went on to say that "Three months into our relationship he was like: 'You can't leave anymore during fights. I'm not going to do that.'" The couple tied the knot in October 2013.
The two broke typical Hollywood star tradition and tied the knot in an intimate courthouse ceremony that cost less than $150. "It was just Kristen and I at this lonely courthouse so they brought us this cake afterwards," the father-of-two told TV show host Jimmy Kimmel. And during an interview with CBS's Sunday Morning, Bell said their wedding day "is still one of the best days of my life."
