Gaga looked stunning in a sheer black dress straight off the Versace catwalk, accessorized with a slicked-back hairstyle, diamond collar necklace, glossy red lip, and smoky eyes. The dress, which features a sheer long-sleeve bodice with exposed corset boning and a drop-waist full skirt, was worn days ago by Gigi Hadid when she kicked off the Versace FW23 runway show in Los Angeles on March 9.

The 36-year-old pop star and actress was not originally expected to perform at the awards as her dates were clashing with the filming of the Joker sequel Folie à Deux, per PEOPLE. At the Wednesday, March 8, news conference for the Oscars Creative Team, showrunner Glenn Weiss said, "We have great relationships with Lady Gaga and her camp [but] she's in the middle of shooting a movie right now, and here we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie." Weiss continued, "So she is not going to perform on the show, however, this is all, from our point of view, about someone making a movie and us completely understanding that that's what is a priority in this business, especially when we are honoring movies."

However, the singer ended up performing, blowing everyone's minds when she ditched her Versace gown for a plain black T-shirt and jeans, finishing it off with a no-makeup look. Gaga performed her Top Gun: Maverick tune Hold My Hand, during the intimate performance, referring to the song as "deeply personal."
She also gave out a really strong message about mental health. "It's deeply personal for me," she began. "I think that we all need each other. We need a lot of love to walk through this life. We all need a hero sometimes — there are heroes all around us in unassuming places. But, you might find that you could be your own hero even if you feel broken inside."
