Lady Gaga took her fans' breath away more than once at the Oscars. For her performance of Hold My Hand at the 2023 Academy Awards on March 12, the singer engaged in a dramatic makeover, ditching her elaborate and expensive Versace gown and heavy make-up for a casual T-shirt, jeans, and a bare visage.

Later, Lady Gaga appeared during the awards show in a remarkably different outfit to perform the Oscar-nominated tune from Top Gun: Maverick. Gaga kept the braid but seemed to wash out the rest of her hair for a performance of her song Hold My Hand, swapping her sheer and structured gown for a straightforward black t-shirt, jeans, and Converse high tops, per Good Morning America.

The result was potent and consistent with Gaga's similarly unfiltered message on mental health support. "We all need each other," she said as she introduced the song. "We need a lot of love to walk through this life. We need heroes sometimes. There are heroes all around us," she continued, "You might find that you can be your own hero, even if you feel broken inside."

A dedication to the original Top Gun director Tony Scott appeared on an overhead screen at the Dolby Theatre as the crowd rose to give her a standing ovation and applause at the song's conclusion. With Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Gaga becomes the first performer to earn three nominations in the best original song category, following Til It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground in 2016 and Shallow from A Star Is Born in 2019. In collaboration with co-writers Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando, the latter earned Gaga her first Oscar victory, per Variety.

The dress Lady Gaga wore to the red carpet made its official premiere on Thursday, March 9, at Versace's Fall/Winter 2023 fashion show in Los Angeles, California. The Medusa head insignia from Versace was embroidered at the waist of Gaga's black gown, first worn by Gigi Hadid on the runway. Tiffany & Co. created the star's Oscars jewels. She donned a stunning platinum and diamond necklace that dates back to the 1950s as well as a diamond cuff, pair of earrings, and ring, per Teen Vogue.
