“I haven’t seen him this happy for a long time. We took advantage of that," said his trainer, hinting at just how much the actor had to cope with emotionally before that.
The vows that people take at the altar aren't said lightly. After all, here are two people promising to love each other through thick and thin as they grow old together. They don't believe that they will become one of many divorced couples. So when it happens, it's a painful blow and can leave a person absolutely devastated. And that is what happened after Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth got a divorce from Wrecking Ball singer, Miley Cyrus.
The couple first met in 2008 while shooting for the film, The Last Song, based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. And much like the romantic premise of the movie, Hemsworth and Cyrus also began to fall in love off-set and started dating. But their love story wasn't a smooth one. The two of them dated for about four years before the Australian actor decided it was time to take their relationship to the next step and proposed to the Hannah Montana star in 2012. At the time, 19-year-old Cyrus told People, “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam (22 years old)."
And that is when they hit their first truly rocky patch, one that caused them to call off the wedding the following year and go their own ways. Life went on for both of them as they achieved new successes in their professional lives. However, in 2016, they were dating again. Hemsworth gave GQ Magazine an explanation for the split the first time around. “Of course it was hard, man [of the broken engagment]. But at the time we were going in different directions, and it’s just what needed to happen. We were both super young, and it was a good decision at the time—we both needed that."
In 2018, they went through with their wedding but had it in a secret ceremony. Fans only got wind of it when the Isn't It Romantic actor posted a black and white photo of the couple wearing wedding attire.
Through various pictures on their respective social media accounts, it seemed like they were happy. However, it came as a shock when just within a year of their wedding, they would separate again and this time permanently. But while it may have surprised us, it must have been devastating for Hemsworth. He had to find a way to cope with the grief of losing this relationship and move on. And he did exactly that through physical exercise and allowing love in his life again.
At the start, it was the physical exertion of exercise that helped him. The youngest Hemsworth brother, 30, credited training for his new role in the film Most Dangerous Game for keeping him from going insane and breaking down in the months after a very public breakup with Cyrus. In an interview with Men's Health Australia, when asked if his focus is now on rebuilding [at the time], Hemsworth replied, “Rebuilding? Yeah, that’s a good way to put it.”
“This last six months, honestly, for keeping my head level and just staying balanced, I’d say exercise has been big for me,” he revealed. “I spent most of the project running around the streets and getting beaten up as well. But it was a great thing ’cause it just kept me moving. I was doing like, 10 [kilometers] a day or something at one point, which I’ve never done in my life.” His trainer, Jason Walsh told the outlet, “I haven’t seen him this happy for a long time. We took advantage of that.”
While he was already getting back on track, he didn't expect to find love again but he did — in the arms of Australian model, Gabriella Brooks. She helped him on his journey of healing. Four months after Hemsworth filed for divorce, the two began dating. Even though the uncle-of-six isn't big on having his private life in the media, it looked like when he was with her, he didn't care about it.
A source told Hollywood Life that Brooks makes Hemsworth feel like he's never felt before. “Liam has always preferred to keep his personal life private, especially when it comes to his relationships, but Gabriella has helped bring out another side of Liam and she’s not like anyone he’s known before," they said. And just as he has fallen for her, so has the Hemsworth family and friends as well.
“He actually enjoyed going out for lunch with her at The Ivy even though he knew there would be a ton of photographers and people staring,” the source explained. “They had lunch with his brother Luke, sister-in-law Samantha, and some of his best friends, Aaron [Grist] and Luke [Zocchi], and he appreciates that she gets along so well with the people he loves the most. Liam definitely likes spending time with Gabriella and he looks forward to seeing where things go with her.”
Another source revealed, “Liam’s family is so taken by Gabby, they think Liam has made a very solid choice. It’s not just that she’s Australian – although that does earn her some bonus points. She’s also so well-spoken and she just seems to have a really good head on her shoulders. They can see how happy she makes Liam too, which is the most important.”
“While Liam’s family has been a huge support since the breakup with Miley, it was Gabriella who made him realize there is life after Miley. Gabriella is quiet, low-key,” another source told Entertainment Tonight. “She loves to be alone with Liam and isn’t seeking attention from others.”
According to HollywoodLife, a friend of Hemsworth, says that one of the reasons the couple gets along is "their mutual love of the ocean and relaxed personalities." The friend continued, “Liam and Gabriella have pretty much spent all of the quarantine together in Australia and it’s been working well for them. She’s very easygoing and loves the relaxed beach life just like Liam. She even surfs with him which is huge for him, he loves that they can share that. And everyone in his family really likes her, she fits right in with them all.”
So it looks like Liam Hemsworth has got another chance at love and we hope that their relationship stays healthy and long-lasting.
