Angelina Jolie’s Son Maddox Protected Her From Brad Pitt During a Fight Just Days Before Their Divorce

Brad Pitt was reportedly drunk during the flight and this was the first time he had lunged at Maddox, but that was enough for Jolie to file for a divorce from him.

At one point, Brangelina was the epitome of relationship goals as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie grew from a family of two to a family of eight. But even their seemingly-unshakable relationship couldn't stand the test of time.

About two years of marriage and 10 years of dating came to an end in 2016 when the two filed for divorce in 2016, per Glamour

Two years before she started dating Pitt in 2004, Jolie—who was with Billy Bob Thornton—adopted her first child, Maddox. She decided to adopt instead of having her own biological child as she felt there were a lot of kids that needed a better life, and it was better to be a mother to a baby who desperately needed good care.

When Jolie visited an orphanage in Cambodia, she saw Maddox, who was just a 7-month-old baby then, and she knew he was her child. "When she visited the place [orphanage] and saw Maddox, he smiled at her and got up, instead of crying like all the other babies. it touched her heart; that's why she chose Maddox," per The Sun

Adopting her first child wasn't a piece of cake, there were a lot of formalities she had to adhere to, since baby trafficking was terrible at that time in Cambodia. Eventually, things worked out in her favor, and afterward, Jolie and Thornton declared they were happy to have added him to their family and for him to meet his half brothers.

"We are very grateful to have him in our lives; his brothers Willie and Harry are very excited to meet him," the couple said in a statement, according to Entertainment Weekly

After Thornton and Jolie separated, the actor met Pitt and interacted with him closely while shooting for Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005.  At the time, Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston, but the two of them announced their divorce, too, and that's how Brangelina became a couple.

In 2006 Jolie became pregnant, and Pitt went on to legally adopt Maddox. Afterward, the pair went to Ethiopia and adopted Zahara. The kids took on the surname Jolie-Pitt. The couple welcomed Shiloh in May 2006, and they went on to adopt son Pax from Vietnam in 2007. Their twins, son Knox and daughter Vivienne, were born in July 2008.

Life was great, and in 2014, they announced their engagement, before making it official the same year. But soon, the two began facing problems. Once, when the two of them were on their way back to LA from France on their private jet, they broke out into an argument.

Maddox, in a bid to protect his mother from his dad, jumped in between the two of them, causing Pitt to allegedly lunge at Maddox.

Pitt was reportedly drunk, and it was the first time he had ever attempted to physically abuse any of his kids. But this incident influenced Jolie's decision to file for divorce and request sole physical custody of their children, per US Weekly

In fact, the altercation led to Pitt being investigated by Children and Family Services. Also, during the divorce hearing, Maddox testified against Pitt, and it was revealed he had stopped using Pitt as his last name. He also wanted to change his last name to Jolie legally, but his mother did not support his decision.

After their separation, Jolie explained that she decided to protect her kids. She said, "I separated for the well-being of my family... I continue to focus on their healing." There have also been reports the iconic actress will not consider getting married again.

Ever since the incident, Pitt's relationship with Maddox has also been strained. Apparently, it got so bad that, according to Us Weekly,  the actress revealed that "Maddox doesn't really see himself as Brad's son," but Jolie has urged her son to "move forward on a new path with Brad."

Blood may be thicker than water, but family is family, irrespective of how you become one.
