“She makes the ordinary seem extraordinary and I just want to thank her for being my everything," said a lovestruck Mark Hamill. They met in the most unusual way and despite ups and downs, made it work.
Hollywood couples aren't really known for being celebrities whose marriages last for a long time. But occasionally, you come across a few actors and actresses who have managed to beat all the odds and sustain their relationship for decades together. Star Wars actor, 68-year-old Mark Hamill, is one of them. Married to Marilou York for 41 years, their love still burns bright and everyone can see it.
It was not at any Hollywood party that these two lovebirds met. In fact, their first meeting was more mundane and surprising than you might imagine. They first laid eyes on each other at a dentist's office. According to People, York was a dental hygienist in Westwood, Los Angeles and Hamill was just another one of her patients for the day. But the pick-up line the actor used certainly got the sparks going. He said, “She came into the waiting room in jeans, white coat, breasts like melons, looking like a Vargas painting. I said, ‘They let you dress like that at work?’ She said, ‘Yeah. Next.’”
With that unconventional line, the two started dating. But there was one particular thing Hamill was looking for in a woman, something that he clearly found in his lovely future wife. On their first date, the Village of the Damned actor took her to see a movie. “I took her to Annie Hall to see if she had a sense of humor. I dropped women if they didn’t,” Mark said. According to another People article, it was "love at first laugh."
Satisfied, they even went to see a screening of his film, Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back. “There was this one close-up of a minor character, curling his lips back from his teeth. She leaned over to me and whispered, ‘Bad caps,’” he recalled.
However, they broke it off as the then 26-year-old actor started becoming a household name with his fame from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. “I had to taste groupies and fame,” he told People, according to Town and Country Mag. “I went to Las Vegas to date 38-year-old showgirls. I wanted to scale all these women. That was exciting for about the first 10 minutes. Eventually, I wanted something to hold onto—and a family.” Dating co-stars was also out of the question following his scandal with fellow General Hospital actress Anne Wyndham.
“You become competitive in a way, which is crazy, because I’m not going to take parts away from her, and vice versa,” he told the Australian Daily Telegraph. “But I thought, ‘Well, she’s not the one, because I do want to have a family, and I’m not going to ask her to give up a career to raise the kids. And I’ll know when it’s right, I’ll find the right one.’ And luckily for me I did.” He wanted no one other than Marilou York to be his family.
And she was waiting for him though she kept busy. "I kept busy. I ran my own life," York told People. "But all the time I thought I was good for him, so I was hoping we’d get back together.”
Finally, Hamill and York did get back together before getting married in December 1978 in a small ceremony in the backyard of their home in Malibu. Soon, their family of two turned into a family of five as they brought in three beautiful kids, Nathan (40), Griffin (36) and Chelsea (31). Now, 41 years later, the father-of-three is still completely head over heels for his wife.
And he often gushes about her on social media. In one tweet, he wrote, “She makes the ordinary seem extraordinary and I just want to thank her for being my everything."
Today is the perfect day for letting @MarilouHamill know how grateful I am for having her in my life. She makes the ordinary seem extraordinary & I just want to thank her for being my everything. #MademoiselleML pic.twitter.com/nMrcxGFhxF— Mark Hamillween (@HamillHimself) February 11, 2018
On their 40th anniversary, he took to Instagram to share his love for her. Quoting celebrated author Maya Angelou, he put up a series of photos with Marilou, each one from a different period in their lives with the caption,"'In all the world, there is no heart for me like yours. In all the world, there is no love for you like mine' - Maya Angelou" according to Bustle. He even added the #NoMeWithoutYou.
He even took a dig at those who thought their marriage wouldn't last. On their 39th anniversary, Hamill posted on Twitter a series of photos of the happy couple, noting, “And they said it wouldn’t last.”
Well, he proved "them" wrong and we pray that he can continue to do so. Here's to their marriage becoming stronger, more loving and longer-lasting.
