As the twins grew up, they faced many controversies that affected the image that the two had built for themselves.
Remember the adorable kid from the 90s sitcom Full House? Yes, we're talking about Michelle Tanner. She was the youngest amongst the Tanner sisters and stole everyone's hearts with her dimpled smile and cheeky one-liners. What's interesting to note that Michelle's character was played by not just one girl but twin sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Where are they now?
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen shared the role of Michelle in the series and while they were just infants when they started working on the show, as they grew up into beautiful individuals they started venturing into different genres.
The young actresses created a space for themselves in Hollywood through their hard work and passion for acting. Born on June 13, 1986, Mary-Kate and Ashley looked alike but they are not identical twins. According to Cheat Sheet, they were fraternal twins which means they developed from separate eggs. When Full House ended in 1995, the girls were rich enough to start their own venture. As soon as they turned 6, they started producing TV and films through their jointly-owned company Dualstar Entertainment Group. They were soon millionaires.
Young girls became a fan of the Olsen twins as they starred in movies like Passport to Paris, Holiday in the Sun, Getting There, When in Rome and many more. These were all movies catered to entertain pre-teen kids. They got so popular that they had fan-clubs in magazines, merchandise, and more.
The Dualstar Entertainment Group legally became theirs after they turned 18, making them one of the world's richest women in the entertainment business. Their net worth? $100 million. But then suddenly they disappeared from the public eye leaving everyone thinking, where did they go?
But before they left, they got into a few controversies. No doubt their images were reputable but being teenagers, they did mess up a bit. Before the twins even started college, rumor had it that Mary-Kate was suffering from an eating disorder. According to New York Post, fans were shocked when Mary-Kate appeared for their film New York Minute's premier looking frail, with skeleton arms and her ribs sticking out.
Though the twins dismissed the rumor, Mary-Kate was checked into an unnamed treatment center in 2004 which was confirmed by her sister Ashley. "She's hanging in there. She is taking the time she needs for herself right now. Right now is especially a good time right before school so she can get healthy," she said.
There was a time when the twins were going to turn 18 and some people had taken charge of counting down the days till their 18th birthday, reported Entertainment Online. Numerous sites surfaced on the internet relishing the fact that the girls were going to be legal which was far worse than just creepy. Unfortunately, the twins played along with the idea on Saturday Night Live when Mary-Kate shouted, "Remember, we're legal in four weeks!" which didn't go well with many people.
The world wasn't ready to see the actresses growing up into different individuals which were not similar to the image they had created for themselves when they were kids. In 2005, Mary-Kate and Ashley broke the New York City smoking rules and lit a cigarette in the women's washroom of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala.
Hollywood.com reported a witness saying, “Mary-Kate and Ashley (Olsen) get up in the middle of dinner and walk in, and Mary-Kate is saying she wants a cigarette. She then proceeds to chain smoke in the bathroom of the Metropolitan Museum! Amanda Peet walked in while Mary-Kate was smoking and was clearly repulsed.”
TMZ also reported that the twins visited their head office of Dualstar Entertainment Group just once a month and even then preferred sitting in their office and chain-smoking for hours. According to California law, smoking indoors in public places is against the law.
In most of the reports, it was Mary-Kate who was usually the highlight because she was the wild one among the two. In another report by New York Daily News, Mary-Kate was found to have had a "teensy bit to drink" attending Naomi Campbell's 35th birthday party. At one point, the actress who was accompanied by her then-boyfriend Stavros Niarchos III looked like "she was on the verge of throwing up."
She also admitted to being addicted to coffee at the age of 10. While talking to W Magazine, she confessed, "When I was younger, on weekends, my mom would make us pancakes with our initials on them and then a tiny cup of coffee," and added, "I remember at 10 sneaking my own coffee and pouring a ton of sugar in and going up to the playroom and drinking it."
The actress also went through a public breakup with Stavros Niarchos III when he cheated on her with Paris Hilton. This not only led to her being on bad terms with Hilton but also drop out from NYU. While Maty-Kate went back to LA, Ashley stayed back.
But as they matured and learned through their experiences, the twins decided to remain away from the eyes of the public. Neither of them is on any of the social media platforms as they've chosen to live a private life. According to Bravo, Ashley said, “We don’t dive into that world [of social media]; we don’t have Instagram or Facebook. So we’ve never been connected to our customers or our fans in that way. We’ve stayed quite sheltered.”
The 34-year-old child actors turned woman entrepreneurs are now proud owners of their own fashion line The Row and Elizabeth * James, which is a reflection of their own unique style. They have an older sister Elizabeth Olsen, who is also an actress.
