Actor Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have an adorable relationship. The couple has been happily married for more than ten years, but when McConaughey originally proposed to Alves, she was not too excited about it, throwing the American heartthrob into a bit of a frenzy.

In an interview with Esquire, the 53-year-old True Detective actor recalls proposing to Alves in front of his family and the agonizingly long time it took for her to accept. While they were spending Christmas 2011 with his family, McConaughey popped the question to her. "I remember hitting the knee, looking into her eyes," McConaughey revealed. "I remember her face. I remember this smile coming up from her feet. I remember her having to catch her breath. And she didn't say yes right away. And then the whole family was going, Jeezus, she's gonna say no," as the actor sat there thinking the worst, per TODAY.

But the Brazilian model did finally respond positively. The pair, who first connected in a bar on Sunset Boulevard in 2006, married in 2012 and are now parents to three kids: sons Livingston and Levi, ages 10 and 14, and daughter Vida, age 13. “After having two (kids) back-to-back, it takes you a while to get out of the cloud and to feel normal again and to think straight,” she said in an interview with PEOPLE while expecting her third child. “I was really trying to push it back as much as I could. But it was time.”

Camila admits that looking back on their wedding, she's sometimes astonished she got married at all, but she's also grateful that she did. She says that because it was never in any of her plans to get married at all. “I think it’s something that we evolved to,” she said. “I was never the girl that grew up saying I want to get married. I actually told my parents to not expect me to get married,” she revealed.

She added, revealing her major priority in the relationship, “The main thing for me is to make sure our home is peaceful, that it’s healthy, that the kids are good. I didn’t know how important [the wedding] was, and how really truly special it was until I went through the ceremony.”

McConaughey too revealed his advice for maintaining a happy marriage, in an interview with Today Extra on the Australian morning program. "Don't make a straight line crooked," the 52-year-old Texas native shared. "If things are going well, keep catching green lights. If they're not, deal with them soon so they don't bubble up and get you later," per Good Housekeeping.
