“It was tough for eight years, but we went through it and we’re on the other side of it. It’s good,” McConaughey said.
Matthew McConaughey loves his mother. The two live together and frequently spend their time together. The actor even shared a heartwarming video of his mother on Mother's Day, featuring his wife, Camila Alves, and his mother sharing a moment together, on Instagram.
Although they're close now, their journey hasn't always been smooth. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in October 2020, Matthew revealed that he had actually been estranged from his mother for a long eight years in the past.
The reason for this estrangement was his mother's inability to keep their conversations confidential. Matthew expressed his disappointment upon discovering that their discussions were being shared with the media, prompting him to establish boundaries by cutting off contact. He stated, “I would have conversations and then all of a sudden—whoop—what we’d talk about would end up in the paper three days later.”
Matthew's decision to distance himself from his mother was triggered by her televised tour of his childhood home, where she divulged intimate details about his personal life, including revealing the location where he lost his virginity. This drastic change in his mother's behavior caused Matthew to perceive her as a different person. “She was always still my mom, but she became a different person. Look, nobody is perfect. This was something that was out of the realm of any relationship my mother has ever had,” he shared.
The period of separation from his mother was undoubtedly challenging for both of them. Fortunately, with the passage of time, their rift was healed, and Matthew found it in his heart to forgive his mother. Although the eight years of estrangement were tough, they managed to overcome their differences and emerged on the other side with a positive outcome. Matthew reflected, “It was tough for eight years, but we went through it and we’re on the other side of it. It’s good.”
In fact, in 2020, she quarantined with the actor, his wife, Camila Alves, and their children, Levi, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, seven. The actor actually also really values his mother's presence and living with the whole family together, per PEOPLE. "We’re good man, we’re down here in Texas," he began. "We’ve got my Mom over here, she’s 88, I cannot keep up with her! I’ve got three kids, they’re redecorating rooms. I’m getting to know my pets better. I know where the water main line is on the property now, and I didn’t know it before."
