Meghan Markle knew for a long time what she wanted to gift her daughter. And now she'll get the chance to.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed they were having their second child shortly before their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. But it was on the show that the couple revealed that they were having a girl. Clearly excited about it, they shared that they would be having a summer baby and while that little girl is sure to be showered with tons of love, affection, and keepsakes, Meghan has already decided what she wants to pass down to her as an heirloom. And she had planned it years before she even met her now-husband, Prince Harry.
In a 2015 interview with Hello! magazine, the Duchess of Sussex, who had played the role of Rachel Zane on the TV show, Suits, revealed that she once treated herself to a Cartier watch as a way of celebrating her show. She had also intended to make it into a family heirloom. "I've always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch," she explained. "When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season — which, at the time, felt like such a milestone — I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version."
She divulged that there was an engraving on the watch that makes it even more special. "I had it engraved on the back, 'To M.M. From M.M.' and I plan to give it to my daughter one day," she said. "That's what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them." Now that Meghan and Harry are having a girl, she can realize her dream.
But there's even more of a special connection for the soon-to-be-newest member of the Windsor family - grandma Diana would have loved it too! According to Today, Princess Diana had a fondness for the brand and often sported her own Cartier Tank watch.
Archie's little sister won't be bestowed with just the watch though. She might just get some other hand-me-downs that are a part of her mother's show. “We wanted Rachel’s jewelry to feel personal, like family heirlooms,” Meghan told Hello! “I’ve actually worn my grandmother’s charm bracelet and pearls from my mom on the show.”
As for Harry and Meghan, with the arrival of the little one, that will tie up their small family nicely. "To have a boy then a girl — what more can you ask for?" Harry said during the interview with Oprah. "Two is it," said the couple when asked whether they would be expanding their family further." Grateful, having any child, any one or a two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl ... now we've got our family and we've got four of us," Harry explained in the interview.
This pregnancy comes as ecstatic news after Meghan opened up about suffering a miscarriage earlier. "Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few," she penned in a heartbreakingly honest New York Times essay. We wish the couple the best of luck and tons of happiness with their new baby.
