The '50 Shades of Grey' actress has been dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin since 2017 and is very private about it.
"A mother's arms are more comforting than anyone else's." — Princess Diana
Just because our kids are grown up, we don't stop worrying about them. And although we are adults, we still seek parental approval for our decisions. Celebrities are no different from us.
The 50 Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson might be an independent and successful artist, but she's still her mommy's little girl. Johnson turned 30 recently and isn't shy to seek her mother's approval when it comes to dating. She has been in a relationship with Coldplay singer Chris Martin since 2017.
Her mom Melanie Griffith who knows the ways of Hollywood only too well looks out for her daughter when it comes to men. Speaking of her daughter's relationship with Martin, she told HELLO!, "Have I given my seal of approval? Yeah, he's amazing. I've said that before I know you're gonna repeat it, but he really is special."
Earlier, the Working Girl actress, 62, sang praises of the Coldplay frontman to People. "I love my daughter’s boyfriend. I think they are a great couple. I adore him!" She added that she wants to honor her daughter's wish to keep things private and added, "But [Dakota] is very private about her life, and I respect that."
Another insider was quoted by People as saying, "Dakota has been filming out of state, but most weekends she comes back to Malibu to spend time with Chris. They are very low-key together. They usually have friends over and rarely go out." Johnson is in a happy place with the star who was previously married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
Griffith has always been a supportive mother to the Suspiria actress. But instead of controlling her or being an overbearing mother she looks out for her by empowering her with the right lessons. Early on, she took the time to explain to her daughter how tricky fame can get and made her little girl make her choices based on what felt right—whether that be work choices or life decisions.
In 2000, Johnson accompanied her mother and then stepfather Antonio Banderas to the Golden Globe awards. The then 10-year-old actress had said she was proud of both of them. She still feels the same way about Banderas even though he has parted ways with her mother. Six years later, as Dakota became Miss Golden Globes, her mother was right there cheering on and sharing the special moment with her.
The mother and daughter had a unique experience when Johnson was starring on Ben & Kate. Right before her sitcom would air, Griffith was went on air in the same network for Raising Hope. Fox put together a little interview montage of the mother and daughter during which it was revealed that Griffith's mother, veteran actress Tippi Hedren, played a cameo on Raising Hope, too.
"I am so proud of Dakota doing Ben & Kate," Griffith had said then. "I was just crying with proud mommy tears. I am amazed by her. She's just a natural actress. She's wonderful," said the happy mum, according to Sheknows. "Dakota is very headstrong. It really doesn't matter what I think about too much. She knows what she wants. I really admire her," she said full of respect and admiration for her daughter. Meanwhile, Johnson said that her mother gives her good advice on everything.
Irrespective of age or success, having a parent look out for you and guide you through life's journey can be a very reassuring and empowering experience.
