A 32-year-old groom was shot dead moments after he got married in Mexico. The authorities state that it might be a case of mistaken identity. Marco Antonio Rosales Contreras was exiting his wedding ceremony at Neustra Senora de La Candelaria church in Caborca around 5 pm when he was hit by four bullets, reported Fox5. According to eyewitnesses, he was shot by an unidentified man who ran away from the spot after firing.
De ser el día más feliz de su vida pasó a ser el más trágico🥺. Así terminó el vestido de una novia luego de que asesinaran a su recién esposo afuera de una iglesia en #Caborca. ¡Increíble y lamentable! pic.twitter.com/8USjOM911e— Rosa Lilia Torres- Noticias (@rosaliliatorrs) October 23, 2022
Antonio was declared dead while being taken to the hospital. He was a computer engineer from Durango but resided in Guadalajara, according to the New York Post. A video taken at the scene shows the bride being escorted away from the church in hysterics and her wedding gown stained with blood. Antonio's sister, Michelle Adriana, was also shot in the back. She was treated at the hospital and discharged in a few hours. Reportedly, the wedding guests tried to give Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to the two people injured while the Red Cross paramedics reached the location.
The Sonora Attorney General's Office stated that this killing was a "direct attack" but they believe that it might be a case of mistaken identity. The statement read, “Investigations indicate that the attack against Marco Antonio was directed towards another individual who was also getting married at the same time in a different nearby city.”
Moreover, another man was also shot at his wedding in a neighboring city on the same day. Antonio had come to Caborca on Saturday morning for the wedding along with his parents and sister. An operation by federal, state, and municipal security forces were carried out to find the culprit. The prosecutor's office has also asked society to collaborate in the investigation to find the person responsible for the crime. Cartel violence is a growing issue in Caborca as the local drug trafficking ring wages war against an armed branch of the Sinaloa Cartel. In September, ten people were killed in a pool hall shooting in Tarimoro.
