After more than 2 decades of being married, hubby dearest still makes Pfeiffer feel like the "Luckiest Girl in the Room"
For many couples, keeping the spark alive years into their relationship or marriage isn't easy. This lack of romance can also put a strain on the couple's life in general. But some people get lucky. One of the lucky ones is Michelle Pfeiffer who has had an exciting journey with her husband for 26 years.
The 61-year-old actress wowed her fans with brilliant performances in films like Murder On The Orient Express, Scarface, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Batman Returns, and many more. While she is quick to adapt to her on-screen characters, two things remained constant—her decision to remain true to herself and her commitment to her beloved husband David Kelley.
Pfeiffer met the television writer in 1993. Their first meeting was far from typical. Pfeiffer thought Kelley was a good match for her sister. “We met on a blind date at a restaurant with a group of other people, which was my idea – and it was not a good idea,” the actress recalled in an interview with Candis magazine, according to Canoe. “We didn’t even really speak to each other that first night. He talked to my sister and I talked to his friend, and he and my sister seemed to be hitting it off, so I thought maybe we should set them up instead, but the friend who was setting us up said, ‘Don’t you dare.’”
It's a good thing the friend was insistent because after a one-on-one date together, the two began to realize they had a lot in common. However, The Fabulous Baker Boys actress was truly convinced that she had met her soulmate when two months into the relationship, he made the decision to raise her adopted daughter, Claudia, together with her.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping, she recalled, "... he really rose to the occasion. And, you know, we were both adults. It's not like we were kids anymore, and we were both at the age where we were ready to start a family. So we both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us, as a couple. We had something else to focus on. It was sort of perfectly timed. I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
Eight months later, the couple were married and soon enough also had their first biological child together, John Henry. And the actress couldn't be happier. Speaking to Parade years ago, she said, "I chose really well with David. I got really lucky. … And 19 years later, I never take him for granted. I’ve never met a person who has more integrity than my husband. I respect that. There’s his humor and intelligence, too, and he’s really cute, all those things—but if you don’t respect your partner, you’ll get sick of him."
"Life is made up of the choices and I’ve not always made good choices but I know I picked the right man. David and I work because we are really compatible," she added. "We have similar morals and we both love to balance work and family in the same way. We respect each other, which is really important." While the two of them have figured out how to build a solid and strong relationship, Kelley has made sure that the spark that brought them together doesn't fade. When asked how he keeps the romance alive, he said: "That’s not hard, but I’m not going to give away her secrets!" But he also said that the reason "is probably that we love each other and respect each other and hold hands a lot."
But to his wife and mother of his children, there's something else that draws her to him. For their 25th wedding anniversary, the actress took to Instagram to share a photo of the two of them and mentioned how she was made to feel like "the luckiest girl in the room for 25 years" by her husband, reported the Daily Mail. That comes as no surprise considering you can't miss the look of love in Kelley's eyes when he looks at her.
"Here's the truth: When we first got together, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it never did. It never has," the Dangerous Liaisons actress said. "I just couldn't believe it could be true that he was such a decent person. And then, he actually has this very wicked sense of humor. And he is so gifted and really bright. It just blew me away." Now, this is the kind of love story that will inspire even the cynics.
