Gitchel, 46, has since been detained by police in relation to the case. In the days following Martinez-Cosman's disappearance, he was also charged with abducting her special needs adult son. Patrick Cosman claimed to have fought Gitchel and managed to get away. "Brett Gitchel kidnapped her disabled son and attempted to strangle him to unconsciousness," court documents obtained by PEOPLE read. "Two hours after the kidnapping and assault of her son, Leticia's car was found burned from a fire started with accelerants in the passenger seat."
The inquiry is still ongoing. Gitchel is still being held on accusations of murder, kidnapping, unauthorized possession of a firearm, theft, and arson. He is being held on a $5 million bail bond. Gitchel's lawyer's information wasn't available, and it wasn't known if he had admitted guilt or not.

A GoFundMe was created earlier by Martinez-Cosman's family to assist in expenses for her son Patrick, implying that they thought his mother had passed away. "Patrick has special needs and needs full-time care," the fundraiser description reads. "Letty was his caretaker, and his life has been turned upside down."
It continues, "The family is raising money to pay for Patrick's ongoing care. Patrick will have extensive physical and mental health needs in the days and months ahead and we cannot do it alone."
A friend of Leticia's commented under the fundraiser, expressing love toward the mom. "Leticia, you have the most beautiful smile and kindness radiates from you. I loved going to Cafe Rozellas for coffee and treats. I remember seeing Patrick playing on the computer while you worked. You always took time to pay attention to and look out for people. I am praying you are ok. You are truly a shining light," she wrote. Another friend commented, "My heart breaks for Patrick. Please know that he's in my prayers."
