"It's so unfair that she was robbed of life like that. I just don't understand what happened," the woman's mother said.
A Detroit family is in mourning and seeking answers after a 25-year-old mother died, just days after giving birth to her second child. Alona White and her husband Derrick came to a medical facility on March 7 for the planned C-section. That afternoon, the pair welcomed their second daughter, Ari. Alona's mother, Katina Ponder, told PEOPLE that her daughter was completely healthy after giving birth and had the chance to nurse the baby. "She was excited," she said of White. "We went from being joyful to devastated."
Hours later, the new mother reportedly began feeling a severe headache, and by the time a nurse got to her room, she was already unresponsive. "She went down for a CT scan and that's when they saw like a really large massive bleeding on the left side of her brain," Ponder recalled to the outlet.
White spent five days in the intensive care unit before she passed away after being taken directly for an emergency craniotomy. "She only really got like an hour to spend with her [daughter Ari]," Ponder said. "It's just so- it's so unfair that she was robbed of life like that. I just don't understand what happened." Ponder feels heartbroken, as she struggles to understand what happened to her dear daughter. She said, "I did not expect to get a call saying that my baby passed away." She added, "She was 25, perfectly healthy, I just don't know what went wrong."
Ponder shares that the grieving family is still confused as to what happened to their beautiful daughter, awaiting the findings of the autopsy to determine the exact cause of White's demise.
A GoFundMe page was set up to cover White's funeral expenses as well as to support her husband and children. In addition to Ari, the couple is also parents to their 2-year-old daughter Aleah. "Alona leaves behind two beautiful daughters a 2-year-old and an 8-day-old baby girl. This has left the family very devastated so any amount of donation will be greatly appreciated," the fundraiser page description reads.
Although the grieving mother Ponder feels extremely grateful for all the contributions, which have already brought in close to $13,590 through the fundraiser, she feels pained to know that her grandchildren will never see their mother again. "It's no amount of money that will bring her back and for these babies to live without their mother - no amount of money," she added.
