Tom Brady and Gisele Went Through a Rough Patch but Worked Hard to Make Their Marriage Stronger | "It Has to Work for Both"

Couples that work together to make their marriage a strong one are the ones who really care about it. They want their family to thrive and their love for each other to last before it turns into resentment. Sometimes, that means taking some extra measures like seeking marriage counseling together. Not everyone survives past this phase but many do when they genuinely care.

NFL quarterback Tom Brady and his wife of 11 years, supermodel Gisele Bündchen, hit a rough patch just like other couples. Their relationship may look perfect on the outside but from the inside, there had been some resentment from the model as the sports star had always been busy with just work. The supermodel had said that she "wasn't satisfied" with their marriage around two years ago, Brady revealed to Howard Stern on SiriusXM show, according to PEOPLE.

"A couple of years ago, she didn’t feel like I was doing my part for the family," the star quarterback admitted. "She felt like I would play football all season and she would take care of the house, and then all of a sudden when the season ended, I’d be like, 'Great, let me get into all of my other business activities. Let me get into my football training,' and she’s sitting there going, 'Well when are you going to do things for the house? When are you going to take the kids to school and do that?'"

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers player said that it was a wake-up call for him. He added, "That was a big part of our marriage that I had to like check myself because she was like 'I have goals and dreams too.'"

The Brazilian model had written her husband a letter telling him about her feelings. "She actually wrote me a letter, and it was a very thought out letter that she wrote to me and I still have it and I keep it in a drawer and I read it," he said. "It’s a very heartfelt letter for her to say this is where I’m at in our marriage, and it’s a good reminder for me that things are going to change and evolve over time. What happened and what worked for us 10 years ago won’t work for us forever because we are growing in different ways," she had said in the letter.

Initially, he was "resentful" towards his wife for bringing up the issues but eventually he attended marriage counseling with her so their relationship could grow stronger. He decided to make a "big transition" for his family and pulled back from the New England Patriots organized team practice activities (OTAs) and other projects. "Because with my family, the situation wasn’t great," Brady said. "[Bündchen] wasn’t satisfied with our marriage, so I needed to make a change in that."

The couple married in 2009 after dating for three years. For the supermodel, who has graced the cover of multiple top magazines, it didn't take any time to realize that he was perfect for her. "I knew right way–the first time I saw him," she told Vanity Fair. "We met through a friend. The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen! We sat and talked for three hours. I had to go home for Christmas, but I didn’t want to leave. You know that feeling of, like, you can’t get enough? From the first day we met, we’ve never spent one day without speaking to each other."

They said "I do" in a small Catholic ceremony in California. They have two children together, Benjamin and Vivian Lake. She has also embraced the role of being a stepmom to his son with his ex, as per CheatSheet.

The NFL quarterback chose to leave the Patriots after 20 years to join his current team just for his family. Even though he didn't plan to get married and have kids before his late 30s since he didn't want anything to come in his way of greatness, life had another plan for him. And, now, he prioritizes his family first.

"The point of a relationship is that it has to work for both [partners]," he said. "You better work on both because if you don’t then it’s not sustainable," he added.

After resolving the rough patch two years ago, the couple seems to be a good place. In 2019, she was right by his side when the Patriots won the Super Bowl. After the initial post-game craze, his wife and three kids joined him on the field, where he knelt before her. Later, the supermodel posted a photo of the precious moment captioning it, "What a special night. Congratulations Patriots! Congratulations my love! Your tireless commitment, discipline and hard work never ceases to amaze me. We love you!"
