Alyssa DeWitt was at the lake with her kids when she saw three children crying out for help.
One pregnant woman became a hero after she ran to rescue three kids, who were fighting for their lives. According to People, Alyssa DeWitt, a five months pregnant woman did not think twice when she saw three children drowning in Lake Michigan.
As per WPBN, the woman noticed the kids when she saw a pair of arms waving out from the waters. The Manistee News Advocate stated that the incident took place around 5:41 p.m. on May 25, 2021.
Speaking of the incident, DeWitt stated, "They were literally drowning in front of my eyes and there was not one person on that side of the beach I could scream to for help. It was empty," on Facebook.
Consequently, the woman called 911 but realized it was difficult for them to hear her. So, she decided to step up. She laid down over the side of the pier and reached out to pull the children to safety. Though the waves made it difficult for her, the pregnant woman was determined.
"Every time I would get them partway up, a wave would smash them back down. This part will stick with me forever. This girl looked at me and said, 'I'm going to die.' It makes me cry every time I think about it," said DeWitt. He continued, "I said, 'I promise you. I am not going to let you die out here. I will get you out of this water.'"
After a couple of failed attempts, DeWitt finally succeeded in saving the children and getting them over the pier wall. Recounting the incident on Facebook, the woman admitted that she herself fell over the edge a few times.
"I don't know how, but I did. A lot of tears and hugs were shared yesterday. I know they were thankful," said the woman.
Moments after she rescued the kids, the cops arrived at the scene. Manistee City Police Chief Josh Glass stated, "Without the actions of this heroic young lady, [this] could have easily turned out differently."
They also confirmed that only two of the kids were swimming in the lake initially. The third kid, who is also the older one, entered the water only when the two other kids began to struggle.
Having saved the kids, the woman is happy she could be of help to them at the right time. She claimed that her trip to the lake with her kids was not premeditated.
