It looks just as beautiful on the current Princess of Wales as it did on the former Princess of Wales.
Catherine Middleton, the new Princess of Wales paid a fitting tribute to her mother-in-law Princess Diana by wearing her pearl-drop earrings during the procession of the Queen's casket from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. The Collingwood pearl drop earrings, as they are known, were first given to Princess Diana before her nuptials to Prince Charles.
Diana donned the earrings frequently, as it was a favorite accessory of the former Princess of Wales.
She frequently wore them with the classic Lover's Knot tiara; her daughter-in-law also adopted this look. The pearl drop earrings are perhaps more well-known for their inclusion in Princess Diana's legendary "Revenge Dress." Diana wore the earrings with the form-fitting off-shoulder black dress during a Vanity Fair party in 1994. The dress got its name as many assumed she wore it out of revenge after Prince Charles' public admitted to cheating on Diana.
On September 14, 2022, Kate Middleton wore Diana's earrings along with a brooch that belonged to the Queen.
The diamond and pearl leaf brooch, which was attached to her black jacket, had three pearls in the leaf's center that were pave-set.
This is not the first time that Kate Middleton has donned her late mother-in-law's earrings. In 2017, when William and Kate Middleton traveled to Belgium with British Prime Minister Theresa May to attend a commemorative event for the Battle of Passchendaele's 100th anniversary, the former Duchess of Cambridge wore a white coat-dress and completed the look with Princess Diana's personal jewelry collection on their second day in Ypres.
She also wore a leaf brooch with pearls and diamonds that belonged to the Queen.
The Collingwood pearls were something Princess Diana wore regularly, on several occasions, before, during, and after her marriage to Prince Charles. According to an article by the Daily Mail, during her US tour in 1985, she paired them with a lacy white gown and the Lovers' Knot tiara for a gala dinner at the British Embassy.
In 2018, Middleton too, dressed rather similarly, while attending a state banquet at Buckingham Palace. She wore a blue Alexander McQueen gown, and completed the look with Diana's favorite Lovers' Knot tiara. She also donned a matching diamond-and-pearl necklace that once belonged to Queen Alexandra.
It's safe to say that Middleton, like Diana, adores the round diamond studs with an additional round diamond dangling from them, followed by a bell cap adorned with three further rows of little diamonds below which hangs the pearl drop. It looks just as beautiful on the current Princess of Wales as it did on the former Princess of Wales.
