"Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months," she explained.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas responded to all the criticism she received over her usage of a surrogate. On the cover of Vogue UK's February issue, the 40-year-old Quantico actress discusses her journey to motherhood and life as a mom to daughter Malti Marie, who turned one earlier this week. Chopra and her husband Nick Jonas made a joint statement on their own social media pages to share the news of Malti's arrival.
Born via surrogate at only 28 weeks, baby Malti Marie had the most fragile of arrivals into the world. “I didn’t know if she would make it or not,” @PriyankaChopra tells British Vogue. Read the full interview: https://t.co/wZyATKWu39 pic.twitter.com/P89yqhVcmF

It was difficult for the new mother to deal with the comments and criticism that followed the revelation that their baby girl was born via surrogacy. "I've developed a tough hide when people talk about me," she told British Vogue. "But it's so painful when they talk about my daughter. I'm like, 'Keep her out of it.'"
She continued, adding, "I know what it felt like to hold her little hands when they were trying to find her veins," referencing the fact that Malti was born three months premature. "So no, she's not going to be gossip. I've been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it's not about my life only. It's hers too," the mother firmly said.

Chopra Jonas continued by stating that it was medically imperative for her to employ a surrogate. "I had medical complications," she explained. "This was a necessary step, and I'm so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months."
Chopra Jonas remarked, "You don't know me," pointing out that critics are unlikely to change their opinions of her. "You don't know what I've been through," she continued. "And just because I don't want to make my medical history, or my daughter's public, doesn't give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were."
Earlier this month, during an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jonas talked about celebrating Malti's first birthday. "We had to celebrate," Jonas told host Kelly Clarkson. "She went through a pretty wild journey in the early part of her life, so we had to celebrate in style. She's one. She's beautiful. It's amazing — the best."

In the Vogue interview, Chopra Jonas adds, “It’s been 20 years of hustling and working at breakneck speed. I’ve always been like, ‘What’s the next thing?’ But now I feel I have a center, a sense of calm because every decision ends up being about her.” She further notes that she has “seven cameras in her room,” adding, “There’s really nothing more satisfying than seeing her face as soon as her eyes open.”
