"Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own timetable, and having a baby is no different," a source said.
Rihanna tricked us all! Before taking the stage at Super Bowl 2023, the singer—who is expecting a second child with rapper A$AP Rocky—teased her big surprise: her pregnancy.
Rihanna revealed she was "thinking about bringing someone" out for her halftime performance in an interview with CBS Sports, but the 34-year-old made it seem as though she was discussing an unexpected musical guest. While talking with the outlet, she teased, "I'm not sure. We'll see," adding that revealing who she would be sharing the stage with on Sunday "wouldn't be a surprise."
As she took the stage, however, she revealed a baby bump and excitedly confirmed her pregnancy to PEOPLE.
Before Rihanna walked the stage, "nobody knew," a source told PEOPLE, claiming that "she totally hid it." In the first few seconds of her performance, Rihanna played up the big reveal by caressing her stomach and letting the zipper of her jumpsuit, which she wore over a form-fitting bodysuit and sculpted bandeau, fall to expose her belly.
The 2023 Super Bowl Halftime entertainer astonished Phoenix on Sunday with her dazzling performance, becoming the first pregnant woman to perform in the halftime performance. She began her eagerly awaited performance with Bitch Better Have My Money and went on to play additional classics including Run This Town and Umbrella.
The source told that the singer was "super excited to confirm" the announcement about her pregnancy. "Rihanna has so many things she is grateful for. She is ecstatic about how her show went. She felt great about performing again. She was also super excited to confirm her pregnancy," says the insider.
The musician, who is expecting a second child with rapper A$AP Rocky (real name Rakim Mayers), also "wants several kids and is happy that her son with have a sibling come summer," according to the source. "She loves parenting with Rakim. They are great together," the insider commented.
In May 2022, the Grammy winner and 34-year-old A$AP Rocky's first child, a son, was born. Rihanna first made the announcement of her first child's arrival in January 2022. A source had told PEOPLE at the time that Rihanna was "excited to be a mom" and "couldn't be happier" after she was spotted in New York City displaying her baby bump.
"Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own timetable, and having a baby is no different," the source said at the time, adding that the musicians were extremely overjoyed about their pregnancy.
